A little bit crazy, too much sexy, and a lot of chaos. That's Harley Quinn, whom Margot Robbie has portrayed in film adaptations of DC Comics stories. Recently, James Gunn came up with a new version of the DC Universe, where he sits as a co-CEO alongside Peter Safran at DC Studios.
Recently, he was speaking at the red carpet and gave a brief update regarding the character in this new DCU. He said of the character's future that,
"That will be revealed down the line."
This isn't a very promising update, but it will potentially bring more conversations about the character on the internet. We can't even say that she will be a part of the upcoming films in the new DC Universe, and what Gunn said could mean that a new actor might play it, or Robbie might reprise it, or there's no Harley at all.
She wasn't the only character the filmmaker discussed; he also wanted one of her colleagues in the DCU, Idris Elba, who portrayed Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad (2021). Regarding this, he says,
"I definitely am always looking for a place to put Bloodsport and figuring that out. So we’ll see what happens."
Peacemaker, whom John Cena portrayed in The Suicide Squad, has already become part of the DCU and will return in Peacemaker Season 2. That means members from the 2021 film have a chance to appear in the upcoming DCU films. Though the chances of that happening in Chapter One: Gods and Monsters are unlikely.
How many times has Margot Robbie portrayed Harley Quinn?
If anyone has nailed the role of Harley Quinn, then it's Margot Robbie, who has portrayed the character in three live-action films. Paul Dini, who co-created the DC Comics character, said of the actress in an interview with ComicBook that,
"Every clip that I’ve seen of Margot as Harley, she seems to have nailed it perfectly. When she’s introducing herself to Katana, when she’s walking around with the bat behind her shoulders, she just seems to have really channeled the true spirit of the characterSeeing that come alive is just amazing for me. I saw the shot yesterday of her and Joker in the therapy session getting ready to kiss, and I was just like, ‘That’s it, that’s my girl."
Margot Robbie first appeared as the crazy Harley Quinn in 2016's David Ayer film Suicide Squad, alongside Will Smith as Deadshot, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, and more. The film was a commercial success and made $750 million against a $175 million budget.
The actress then appeared in its spin-off, Birds of Prey (2020), which wasn't a commercial success like Suicide Squad and only made $205 million on around a $100 million budget. Again, Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn was worth watching.
Most recently, she portrayed the character in Suicide Squad's standalone sequel, The Suicide Squad, which James Gunn directed but was a box office bomb. However, it was partially due to its simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max, the latter of which saw it become the most-watched DCEU film on the streaming platform.
