The Madonna biopic is one of the most eagerly anticipated projects in Hollywood.

Announced in 2020, the film has faced a string of delays, rewrites, and studio changes that have had fans of the pop icon wondering if they’d ever get to see it. The as-yet-untitled film is said to recount the extraordinary journey of Madonna Louise Ciccone, the Michigan-born dancer who rose to become one of the greatest voices in global pop music.

The moment it was announced that Madonna would co-write and direct the project, it became a matter of mass curiosity. While the film was eventually sidelined, news began to swirl that it had been scrapped altogether. Reports of new movement have returned life once again, instilling hope in fans who want to see the story of the Queen of Pop come to life in theatres.

Julia Garner teases fresh details on Madonna biopic

Julia Garner, who rose to fame with Ozark and now stars in Weapons, has confirmed that she is still attached to the Madonna biopic. She revealed in an interview with W Magazine:

“I can’t say too much about it, but yes, it’s a work in progress.”

She went on to express her admiration for the icon, revealing her favourite tracks of the artist. She said:

“I love ‘Borderline,’ that’s probably my favorite. I also love ‘Papa Don’t Preach.’ I love ‘Burning Up.’ I love Confessions on a Dance Floor. I grew up with that album. Obviously ‘Vogue,’ and ‘Ray of Light.'”

This latest confirmation follows months of speculation over whether the project was still happening. Garner’s remarks, combined with Madonna’s own allusion to still working on the script, provide reassurance that the biopic has not been shelved and is moving forward.

Previous developments and the vision for the Madonna biopic

The Madonna biopic has a tumultuous production history. The film was initially set up at Universal Pictures with Madonna writing the screenplay along with Diablo Cody, before later having Erin Cressida Wilson working on it. But in January 2023, it was claimed the project had been pulled, which disappointed fans.

As of mid-2024, Madonna hinted that she was revisiting the script, sharing scenes on Instagram with images of herself working on the writing, indicating that the project was still moving forward. In an interview with the SmartLess Podcast, Garner shared her experience of auditioning for the biopic.

She remembered having to master dance moves, dance before Madonna, and then convince the superstar that she could portray her on screen. She shared:

“I kind of just wanted to see if I could do it, because I wasn’t a trained dancer and I had to learn how to dance and then dance in front of her and convince her that I can dance, basically, and sing. And sing with her!”

Few recording stars have been as hands-on in shaping their own cinematic legacies, and Madonna’s participation suggested a deeply personal rendering of her life and career.

The biopic will explore Madonna’s transition from a young Midwestern girl with a dance scholarship to a global superstar who has reshaped pop music, fashion, and performance.
