"With a lightsaber": says Natalie Portman about returning as Padmé Amidala in Star Wars
While speaking at The One Show, Natalie Portman has expressed interest in returning back as Padmé Amidala, a character that she portrayed years ago in Star Wars. In the due course of her character's storyline, she meets death.
But Portman has mentioned some possibilities through which the character could return to the franchise, despite Padmé facing death. She imagines Padmé coming back as a Jedi, and also bearing a lightsaber, as she mentions:
“With a lightsaber. I think she’d have to be a Jedi. If somehow she were brought back from the dead, that would be exciting.”
Natalie Portman had appeared in the role of Padmé Amidala in three movies of the franchise, which includes:
- Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)
- Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002)
- Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Padmé Amidala is the Queen of the planet, Naboo. Her husband is the Jedi Knight, Anakin Skywalker, who later morphs into the Darth Vader. Padmé is also a part of the Galactic Senate. However, after the birth of her children, the twin duo Leia Organa and Luke Skywalker, Padmé passes away.
Even though there has been no announcement or confirmation about Padmé's return to the franchise, going by how the storylines function in that world, the character's return does not seem impossible at all. It would in fact be delightful to witness Natalie Portman come back as Padmé.
Apart from Portman's role as Padmé, the Academy and Golden Globe winning actor is recognised for her work in films including Heat (1995), Mars Attacks! (1996), Cold Mountain (2003), Closer (2004), V for Vendetta (2006), Black Swan (2010), No Strings Attached (2011), the Thor film series (2011, 2013, 2022), Annihilation (2018), Lucy in the Sky (2019), May December (2023), and many more.
Natalie Portman's forthcoming releases include Guy Ritchie's Fountain of Youth, Phil Johnston's animated film The Twits, and Cathy Yen's The Gallerist.
