Emerald Fennell writes and directs the latest adaptation of Emily Brontë's 19th-century gothic novel, Wuthering Heights, with Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi as the two leads. It has drawn ire from the author's fans since the moment it was said to be in production. They were not on board with the casting choices or the film's graphic depiction of Brontë's writing.

The initial screenings, as reported by Words of Reel, revealed polarizing reactions from early viewers. Some of them called out its "hyper-s*xualized imagery" and "grotesque absurdity," while others praised Robbie and Elordi's "great chemistry" and "committed performances." It seemed in line with Fennell's past work on Saltburn and Promising Young Woman.

Despite reservations from Brontë's fans, Fennell's psychological drama will arrive in theaters on Valentine's Day next year, with a supporting cast of Shazad Latif, Hong Chau, Owen Cooper, Alison Oliver, and more. Before that, Warner Bros. released a teaser for the film, which lives up to the words of the early viewers.

It offers a glimpse into this vibrant, erotic Gothic drama, as Charli XCX's 2025 electronic dance song, Everything is Romantic, plays in the background. The film will also include original songs from the British pop star. Thus, Fennell seems to be the latest filmmaker to make anachronistic musical choices, after Sofia Coppola for her 2006 film, Marie Antoinette.

The film's synopsis, as per IMDb, reads:

"A passionate and tumultuous love story set against the backdrop of the Yorkshire moors, exploring the intense and destructive relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw."

Emerald Fennell's film may not be a by-the-numbers adaptation of the namesake novel, but it also follows the tragic tale of two ill-fated lovers since they met each other in their formative years.

Warner Bros. hasn't revealed any logline for the movie yet. However, the studio has been teasing the film with phrases from its source material, whether it is "Come undone," or:

"Be with me always. Take any form. Drive me mad."

Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights cast members include Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi as Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, respectively. The Adolescence breakout star, Owen Cooper, plays young Heathcliff, while Charlotte Mellington joins him as young Catherine. It will mark their feature film debuts, alongside Vy Nguyen, who plays young Nelly Dean, the main narrator from Emily Brontë's novel.

Hong Chau, the Oscar-nominated star from Darren Aronofsky's The Whale, stars as Nelly, while Shazad Latif joins as Edgar Linton. Alison Oliver, who was in Fennell's 2023 film Saltburn, collaborates again, playing Isabella Linton.

Robbie and Elordi's casting choices were announced by Deadline in September 2024 in Fennell's film adaptation. Elordi had already worked with Fennell on her Saltburn, while Robbie co-produced it and her Promising Young Woman (2020) through her LuckyChap Entertainment banner.
