Amanda Seyfried has teased the third film in the blockbuster musical comedy franchise Mamma Mia!. She was recently in a conversation with Deadline, where she said that she thinks that Mamma Mia 3 will happen. When asked about a possible sequel, she replied,

"Yes. I think."

It may already be in development, but no official announcement has been made.

The actress plays one of the leading characters in the franchise, Sophie Sheridan, daughter of Donna Sheridan, played by Meryl Streep. The cast also includes Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård in leading roles. One of them may be Sophie’s biological father, though the film never reveals which.

As of now, there are two movies in the series and both became commercial successes at the global box office. The first movie made $706 million on a $52 million budget and its sequel made $402 million on a $75 million budget.

The update on the possible sequel to Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again came from a Deadline report in May 2025, where it was said that Sabrina Carpenter was in talks for the movie.

During the latest interview, Amanda Seyfried revealed that other cast members, including Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep, are interested in Mamma Mia 3. However, it’s unclear how Streep would fit in, since her character, Donna, has died in the story. But that too was executed at some level in the second film.

While talking to Deadline, Amanda Seyfried provided an answer to this too. She explained that it is all about timing. She said,

"I remember they did ‘Mamma Mia 2’ instead of Wicked…They could only do one big movie at that time, so we ended up sliding into that. So it’s actually about silly things like that, and story, silly things like that."

Wicked was a commercial hit too and ended up making $756 million on a $756 million budget. Currently, the sequel to the film, Wicked: For Good is in development and is scheduled to be released this November. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande will reprise their roles as Elphaba Thropp and Glinda Upland in the film.

The films' producer, Judy Craymer, is positive about Mamma Mia 3 and thinks that it will happen. In an interview she gave to Variety in 2023, she said that,'

"I am so hands on with everything that I can only do so much. So the TV show has been a big priority. I’m sure [the third movie] will happen. I’m in the privileged position that I have Universal Studios wanting to do it, who I love working with, and I have a storyline."

Taking all this into account, the hopes for the third film are high. However, nothing can be said until we get an official announcement regarding that.
