Last year, director Fede Álvarez brought a new chapter of the Alien franchise to the big screens. With Alien: Romulus, he breathed new life into this monstrous franchise.
Álvarez's direction was one of the highlights of this ninth installment, which truly felt cinematic with its scale and vision. It's the reason why the film drew audiences to the theaters. Apart from that, if there's one thing that stood out for most people, it was David Jonsson's solid performance as the android, Andy.
Whether the fans loved the film or not, they were wondering if they would see what the future holds for Andy in a follow-up project. As it turns out, Alien: Romulus 2 might be out sooner than later, according to Jonsson's recent comments during his appearance on Eric Italiano and Cade Onder's Post-Credit Podcast.
In the interview, the actor was asked if the sequel would commence filming this year.
“I can't share [very much], but I will say I don't think you're far off — your sources have something to them,” David Jonsson said.
What will the Alien: Romulus sequel be about? Here's what we know
Alien: Romulus arrived in theaters in August 2024, with the young cast of Cailee Spaeny, Isabela Merced, and more, amping up the tension every moment they appeared on screen. Made with a reported $80 million budget, the film ended its theatrical run with over $350 million in collections worldwide, as per Box Office Mojo.
The box office figures put it in the second spot as the highest-grossing installment in the franchise, right behind 2012's Prometheus. So, it's surprising that the film was initially supposed to arrive directly on streaming. Luckily, the studio decided to bring it to cinemas.
Thanks to its critical and commercial success, it is expected to receive a sequel soon. It was hinted at in The Hollywood Reporter interview with the 20th Century Studios Boss Steve Asbell.
In October 2024, Asbell said, when asked if
"We’re working on a sequel idea now. We haven’t quite closed our deal with Fede [Alvarez], but we are going to, and he has an idea that we’re working on. The two survivors, Rain and Andy, played by Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson, were real highlights of the film. And so I always think of it like, “Wow, where do people want to see them go next?” We know there’s going to be aliens. We know there’s going to be great horror set pieces. But I fell in love with both of them, and I want to see what their story is."
Based on his comments, the Alien: Romulus sequel will revolve around Calee Spaney and David Jonsson's characters, who were the only survivors during their intergalactic journey.
What else is David Jonsson working on?
With Alien: Romulus, David Jonsson has become a critical part of the Alien franchise canon, and the upcoming sequel will hopefully analyze Andy's moral complexities even further. However, that's not the only exciting project he is working on.
Jonsson will be playing the American singer Sammy Davis Jr. in Colmon Domingo's feature directorial debut, Scandalous!. He is also headlining the upcoming Stephen King adaptation, The Long Walk, alongside Cooper Hoffman. Apart from that, he is also slated to star in the forthcoming yet-untitled project from Frank Ocean, alongside Taylor Russell. More details on these projects are expected in the coming months.
