On General Hospital, Jason has remained loyal to Carly for decades, often at the detriment of his relationship with everyone else. Anytime Carly beckons for Jason, he puts on his white coat and drops everything to rescue her. He even allowed his children to believe he was dead to keep her out of prison. However, recently, Jason has found himself at a crossroads, unable to clue Carly in on Josslyn's WSB secret or risk sending Britt to prison for the rest of her life.
Carly has held Jason back for decades on General Hospital

Despite Jason (Steve Burton) having several romantic relationships with other women on the canvas, Carly' (Laura Wright) s always been the center of his universe. Whether Sam (Kelly Monaco) or Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst), at one point or another, Jason has placed them on the back burner, usually due to Carly's “crisis of the moment,” and a new reason for him to clean up her mess. With Britt (Kelly Thiebaud) back in the picture, it's clear that Carly isn't a fan and doesn't approve. Even though Jason lost years of his life to keep her out of prison, it's not enough. She still commands his full and undivided attention.
During his attempt to rescue Britt from her apparent captivity at the Five Poppies, Jason uncovered a startling secret about Carly's daughter, Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy). Learning that Josslyn was an undercover WSB agent would normally send Jason straight to Carly, whom he'd inform about everything. However, Carly's latest romantic interest, WSB Director Jack Brennan (Chris McKenna), is using the full weight of his authority to keep Jason at bay. Jason can be the white knight that puts Carly ahead of everything yet again, or he can ensure Britt remains a free woman, but he can't do both.
The truth finding its way to the surface is inevitable, especially since Josslyn has showcased a questionable ability to keep it a secret. Once Carly uncovers the truth that her best friend, her savior, is withholding sensitive information from her, nothing will ever be the same. He's making a conscious effort to choose the freedom of another woman (Britt) over Carly's peace of mind, and she's going to view this as the ultimate betrayal.
Losing Carly could give Jason new life

Carly's reaction to what she will perceive as Jason's betrayal will rock the foundation of Port Charles. While she probably won't engage in a full-scale war with Jason, the distance put forth between them will be deafening. However, even though losing Jason will be the worst thing for Carly, it might be the best thing for Jason. Diving deeper into a potential romance with Britt is far from the only thing Jason would be free to explore.
After Sam's death, Jason moved into the Quartermaine mansion to help the children remain together. Throughout this time, he grew closer to previously distant family members, like Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot). Although Jason would likely never fully embrace the life of a Quartermaine, without Carly as a thorn in his side, he stands a better chance of strengthening those bonds.
In all likelihood, he and Carly will never truly sever ties permanently, but even a temporary fallout will have a sizable impact. Jason and Carly have operated as a de facto tandem for as long as they've been friends, so it might be time to shake up a stagnant status quo.
