General Hospital’s Drew Cain has been spiraling for months, and viewers hoping he’d find redemption after being shot twice in the back are about to be disappointed. Instead of a kinder, gentler Drew emerging from unconsciousness, he moved further into the darkness. Drew’s next move is so heinous and extreme that even his portrayer, Cameron Mathison, admitted to being stunned about it when he read the script for the first time.

Drew’s Latest Betrayal

In a new interview with Soaps, General Hospital’s Cameron Mathison didn’t mince words about how low Drew has sunk. Laughing at the irony, the actor admitted, “It’s so horrible. It’s just awful!” What he’s referring to is Drew’s decision to prevent Danny (Asher Antonyzyn) from spending time with Scout (Cosette Abinante) following Monica’s (Leslie Charleson) death — a choice that not only hurts his daughter but inflicts unnecessary pain on Jason (Steve Burton) through Danny.

Mathison explained that Drew rationalized the cruelty as a way of striking back at his brother. In his mind, Jason has long been celebrated as the pride of the Quartermaines, despite his violent lifestyle. “Drew has so much animosity and hatred toward Jason, who is out there literally killing people and is still thought of as a hero,” Mathison said. “Jason always had the Quartermaines thinking he’s the golden child. Meanwhile, he’s a hitman! He kills people for a living!”

The hypocrisy eats at Drew, who has felt perpetually overshadowed by Jason on General Hospital. But even with that resentment, Mathison admitted this move crossed a line that surprised even him. After months of questionable choices, it represented an escalation that’s both shocking and, in Drew’s mind, deeply personal. (Who really shot Drew?)

A Grief-Fueled Spiral

While Jason is the immediate target of Drew’s vengeance, Mathison pointed out that Monica’s passing has also left Drew emotionally raw and vulnerable. The actor noted that Monica may not have raised Drew, but she embraced him as her son, and he returned the love by calling her ‘mom.’ Their bond was an anchor for Drew, one that made her loss especially devastating.

“Monica’s death is incredibly traumatizing for him,” the General Hospital star explained, adding that the two had grown distant in recent years. “As time went on and Drew sort of went down his own path, a distance formed between he and Monica. That was hard on Drew, and they never got a chance to reconcile before her death.”

That unresolved grief now fuels his self-destructive decisions. Instead of honoring Monica’s memory, Drew is lashing out at those closest to him, channeling his pain into hostility — especially toward Jason. If viewers thought this shocking move toward Danny is Drew’s rock bottom, Mathison warned otherwise. The actor teased that this act is only the beginning of a far darker chapter. General Hospital’s Drew, he hinted, has more vindictive plays coming, and they may leave him with dangerous enemies ready to strike back.

As Mathison put it, Drew is making choices so nasty he may need to watch his back — because in Port Charles, payback is never far away. (Find out how Mathison championed inner growth.)

General Hospital can be seen weekdays on ABC and Hulu.
