It finally happened! General Hospital's Drew Cain has been shot, a plot scenario that the soap has been setting up all year. The character has undergone a dramatic transformation since being released from prison nearly two years ago, but the metamorphosis over the last year has been especially jarring. However, Cameron Mathison feels it was necessary.

Drew's bad deeds catch up with him a big way

Somehow, Drew Cain went from being a beloved character who everyone admired to the most hated man in town. The heinous things he has done just this year include trying to bulldoze the crypt where his son, father, and grandparents were put to rest; carrying on an affair with his nephew's wife while controlling her life, having an old woman arrested for alleged insurance fraud; emotionally abusing Willow's (Katelyn MacMullen) child while neglecting his own; and serving two teenagers with restraining orders, among other things.

Drew has just grown nastier and nastier as the months have gone on, which is a change of pace for Mathison, who played good guy Ryan Lavery on All My Children.

"I’ve trusted the process and now, it’s become weirdly therapeutic," he told Soap Opera Digest. “I try to be a really nice human and a good, solid person in my life and I’ve gone through a lot of big life challenges in a very short stretch of time...I go to work and get to be such a jerk — it’s almost like my little fantasy escape. I don’t know if it’s good for my psyche or not, but I’ve really leaned into it."

Mathison relishes playing out this shooting mystery and understands that everything Drew has done over the last year has led to this big moment.

"Obviously, everybody hates me like crazy, but at the same time, they had to do that for the last four or five months," he said. "They can’t just have people not like me. They have to have people want to kill me! And in order to have multiple people want to kill you, you’ve got to be pretty despicable — and they’ve done a really good job with that with Drew!"

Mathison has done an incredible job of making the entire town of Port Charles detest Drew. The suspect list is one of the longest we have seen in a soap mystery like this in years. Who shot Drew is anyone's guess, but we can't wait to find out.
