Any General Hospital fan who has been shipping a future romance between Gio Palmieri (Giovanni Mazza) and Emma Scorpio-Drake (Braedyn Bruner) saw significant movement in those hopes on the August 20th episode of the show.

The characters had one of their most emotional and heartwarming scenes in their time together on General Hospital, when Emma was sad and worried in the wake of her cousin Maxie Jones’ (Kirsten Storms) heart attack. Emma had just left Maxie’s house, where she was watching Maxie’s children, and she went to meet Gio at the Metro Court pool.

There, Gio comforted her and promised to be there for her, then they held hands and she put her head on his shoulder.

That is a sign of the bond between the characters, who started off at odds with each other as Gio met Emma when she was stealing someone’s wallet. In May, Emma stood by him and listened to him when he learned that his biological parents are Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton) and Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna). Emma advised him and they ran away briefly to Canada before Emma invited him to live with her and her grandmother Anna Devane (Finola Hughes).

Since then, a lot of their screen time has been devoted to Gio helping Emma investigate Professor Dalton (Daniel Goddard).

Mazza did an interview with Soap Opera Digest that published after the episode aired on August 20th. He didn’t give any spoilers but talked a lot about the bond Gio has with Emma, which has been bolstered by his real-life bond with Emma’s portrayer.

“We’ve become best friends,” Mazza said in the interview. “She celebrated my birthday with me - she came to all the festivities - and on the show, she’s sort of like my rock…Working with her, it’s an authentic connection. It’s real, and it’s us responding to each other in such a beautiful way.”

Mazza spoke a lot about Gio and Emma’s friendship on General Hospital. Of the aftermath of the parental reveal, which happened at the General Hospital Nurses’ Ball, he said, in part, “She knew that he was going through something so painful and so intense, and she offered her support with no strings attached. And we know how to be there for each other; we’re comfortable with each other, and anything can happen from that.”

Mazza and Bruner both shared a link to the SOD interview on their Instagram Stories. Mazza also shared a fan-made clip of a scene from the General Hospital episode.

In a separate interview in May, right after the Nurses’ Ball, Bruner said the romantic potential is there. “I think she would drop anything for him. She’s never seen him upset before; I don’t think anyone has seen him this upset before. And it breaks her heart because she loves people and wants to help people, but again, this is her person. I don’t think she knows it yet — romantically speaking, I mean, but she loves him, whether that’s in a friend way or more.”
