General Hospital fans were devastated when iconic actress Leslie Charleson passed away in January. Because of recording schedules and scripts that have already been written, her character, Monica, wasn’t killed off until recently. In the heartbreaking scenes, Jason (Steve Burton) found Moncia had died and informed Tracy (Jane Elliot). The two consoled each other as they mentally prepared to tell the rest of the family. Their interaction was raw, emotional, and steeped in the show’s history, deeply moving the viewers who reacted online about the powerful scenes

A Goodbye That Hit Close to Home

A General Hospital fan shared a screenshot of Jason and Tracy holding each other on Facebook, with the caption, “Amazing thus far…” The image itself had a caption embedded in it that stated, “Standing ovation for Jane and Steve for their gut-wrenching performances.” Fans quickly shared their reactions, and the consensus was clear: Burton and Elliot delivered incredible performances. The comments were full of praise for their work that was collectively deemed their best work in years, and it reflected the fan grief not only for Charleson, but also for her alter ego, Monica.

Corrine Rupar simply stated, “2 Great Artists.” Sharon Zollo Schneider called it a “Very moving performance,” while Pat Harting-Wood simply added, “Agreed.” Others echoed the same sentiment. Collette Ryan remarked, “Yes. That was sensitive and beautiful,” and Charlene Anderson emphasized her reaction with a resounding, “YES!!!!!!”

Many were struck by how genuine the grief appeared. Marilyn Bell commented, “That was real,” while Barbie Stailing observed, “I Think most of that was real, with real tears 😭.” Stephenie Diana expanded on that thought, noting, “Not that they’re not great actors, they are, and were phenomenal but a lot of it was probably genuine grief as they were most likely good friends to the actress in real life 🙁.”

For some, the emotion was overwhelming. Arlene Ligeros Pedersen called the moment “heartbreaking 💔,” and Debra Moran admitted, “They made me cry. Amazing performers!”

Others were equally effusive in their praise. Lenor Shpak called the scenes “Perfection 👏👏👏👏💕.” Susan Yanoff wrote, “It was an incredible performance by both of them,” and James P. Johnson added, “Amazing. Heartbreaking. Great acting!”

The emotional connection between the General Hospital characters as aunt and nephew wasn’t lost on the viewers either. Becky Blyth DiGiacomo pointed out, “Tracy and Jason! Aunt and nephew! 👏👏👏Hope Monica left house to both! They work together to keep family together!”

As fans shared their reactions, a common theme emerged: this was more than just another soap opera plot twist. Phyllis Mincieli summed it up best by saying, “I don’t think they were doing much acting. It was raw emotion and grief. So moving and real! 😢.”
