Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) has never had it easy on General Hospital, and lately, he’s been right in the middle of the Quartermaine family’s heartache. As Port Charles gathered to mourn Monica (Leslie Charleson), Jason’s usually stoic exterior cracked in powerful scenes opposite Tracy (Jane Elliot). The emotion behind those moments carried over into real life, as Steve Burton took to social media to share his gratitude for how the show paid tribute to the late Leslie Charleson — and to thank the fans who have supported him through one of the most moving weeks in recent General Hospital history.

A heartfelt message to fans

General Hospital’s Steve Burton admitted his latest post wasn’t planned but felt necessary. “I was gonna do another video, but this was real, so…I want to thank everybody @generalhospital for all of their hard work to HONOR Leslie Charleson, who played my mom Monica Quartermaine. Thank you to the cast, the crew, the writers, the producers, @fvalentinigh, and most of all THANK YOU. The fans. Special shout to Aunt Tracy. Jane Elliot. We miss Leslie so much, but Heaven rejoices. God Bless.”

He included a video in which he greeted fans and said, “I just want to check in and just…say thank you for all the kind words. I've been getting a ton of messages about this week's show on General Hospital, about everybody's performances, [which] were fantastic. So, shout out to…the rest of the cast, the crew, and the writers and producers and everybody who took the time to honor Leslie Charlson, first and foremost, who played Monica Quartermaine.” Fighting back the tears, he ended with, “We love her and we miss her. Thank you, guys.”

Fans react with love and memories

The responses were immediate, heartfelt, and often emotional. His bestie and costar Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) wrote, “Love you, buddy. Really well done to you and everyone.” @wednesday_temple added, “You and Jane Elliot honored her with your performances that were clearly from your own hearts and love.”

Longtime viewers also chimed in. @debann057 said, “I have watched GH 50 years… got hooked when I was 18. Love the Q’s and all their antics…Leslie is in the halls of GH just like the ones we lost before her. They are always with you.” @andrea.idelman shared a personal family story of how Charleson once took the time to write her sister a long, thoughtful letter when she was considering acting school — proof, she said, that the actress was as kind off-screen as she was talented on-screen.

Others kept their words short but powerful. @mauncindy commented, “Steve, your performances and Jane's have been outstanding. So heartfelt and deep. I'm so sorry for your personal loss of your castmate and friend, Leslie. She's been missed by thousands of us viewers, too. RIP, beautiful lady.”

@countrygirl203 said, “This week has been so emotional! You and Jane have done amazing! Leslie would be proud!” Meanwhile, @kimberly_ann_edmonds insisted, “This proves why you are the only man who could ever truly embody Jason! Your acting and your true pain from losing a beloved cast member had me bawling.”

From fans reminiscing about watching Monica for decades to those who admitted they cried through every scene, the comment section was filled with love, gratitude, and a sense of shared mourning. As @art_of_tricia_graham_locke summed up, “Every single one of your scenes were not acting. I can tell, as well as everyone else, that you are feeling this loss far beyond the program. Everyone who has watched her from day one of General Hospital till the last scene she was in feels this loss, like she was our mom. I am so incredibly sorry...I'm sending my deepest condolences to everyone who knew her and loved her.”

General Hospital can be seen weekdays on ABC and Hulu.
