"For me, PRISM is a cathartic release": John Butler announces new album with second single "So Sorry"

John Charles Wiltshire-Butler, who is commonly known as John Butler, announced his upcoming tenth studio album, PRISM, on May 27, 2025. Alongside PRISM, he is also releasing the album's second single, titled So Sorry. The album will be released on September 5, 2025, but is available for pre-saving. Butler posted the announcement on his official Instagram account and captioned the post:

"🔻PRISM🔺is available to Pre-order now! Check out the new single ‘So Sorry’ wherever you stream▶️ 🔗 in Bio".

Butler posted a short video announcing the upcoming release, and it also featured vinyls, CDs, and merch that will be available on the release day as well. John has also been working and releasing music under the Australian roots-rock band called the John Butler Trio. PRISM is an entirely solo studio album, and this is what Butler had to say about it:

"Personally, I did a lot of soul-searching and reflecting as this record took shape... For me, PRISM is a cathartic release, a celebration of going solo, moving away from the John Butler Trio moniker, and yet another sonic stretch as I continue to refine my musical journey. The title reflects the sonic and emotional 'bandwidth' I wanted to explore: the whole spectrum of what it is to be human. Love, death, politics, inner and outer turmoil, and redemption," the singer explained.

Regarding his fresh single, So Sorry is a song about long-lasting relationships. Butler described it:

"On the deeply reflective single... You get together as 'kids' and if you’re lucky, you learn how to regulate and become adults together. But no one gets out unscathed."

PRISM is the third album of a four-part project that Butler started in May 2024, with his first album called Running River. It is followed by the second album, which was released in the same year, a few months apart (November 1, 2024). The two previously released albums are labelled as:

"contemplative and explosive."

The upcoming album will feature a mix of festival hits, high-energy rock songs, and emotional ballads.
