VMAs 2025 have released their nominations. The award ceremony, scheduled for broadcast via CBS and MTV on September 7, 2025, released the nominations list via their official website as well as posts on their official X page on August 5, 2025:

However, many fans are not happy with this year's nominations, with artists like BTS's J-Hope, Addison Rae, and others having been overlooked. Fans of these artists wasted no time in taking to social media to call out the awards cermony for snubbing these artists, exemplified by the X posts below:

"Seokjin, JHope, Taehyung, Namjoon (did anyone else have a project that could have qualified but didn't?) deserve nominations too! I hate VMAs, I guess I'll look forward to their karma very very soon," a fan reacted.
"addison rae not receiving a single VMA nomination, even though she was one of the only pop girls who delivered high quality cinematic music videos, is honestly disrespectful," another fan stated.
"sabrina (Carpenter) not being nominated for artist or song of the year at the VMAS…." one netizen observed.
"the vmas are not fooling anybody. Those awards are fan nominated and they clearly don't want a black woman to win a big category, they snubbed sza during her biggest year and they're doing it again that she's in a whole stadium tour," another netizen opined.
"The MTV VMAs snub Carti,Glorilla,Drake, Clipse, NBA young boy, Travis Scott, central cee, Lil baby, Metro boomin, Kanye, Latto,Future,Don toliver, for any Nomination Spot," a fan commented.

Other notable artists who have been left out of the nominations include Lana Del Rey and Benson Boone, among others.

VMAs have been mired in controversies before 2025

While fans are calling out the 2025 award ceremony for snubbing artists once again, a look into the history of the award ceremony shows that it has been mired in controversies for years now.

Fans and artists alike have called out the award ceremony and alleged that it is rigged. Kanye West called out the award ceremony in 2016, per The Wrap. BTS fans have been consistently calling out the ceremony for years now, first in 2022, and then again in 2023.

Fiona Apple called out the awards and the entire music industry as well as the culture of fans following celebrities and their lifestyle, at the 1997 award ceremony, according to a report in Genius.

Other than the rigging, superficial allegations, VMA nominees and hosts themselves have been controversial, from Drake's declaration of love for Rihanna in 2016 to Lady Gaga's 'meat dress' controversy in 2010.

There have also been allegations surrounding the award ceremony's afterparties, with Sean Diddy facing allegations of se**al assault of a minor. He was accused along two other unnamed celebrities, with the allegations surfacing in 2024, according to a BBC report in December 2024.
