Hugh Anthony Cregg III, commonly referred to by his stage name Huey Lewis, shared a few recent health updates about his hearing loss. The lead singer and harmonica player of Huey Lewis and the News talked about his severe hearing loss seven years ago (2018), when he was diagnosed with Meniere’s disease. Back then, he had to take time off from the stage, and tour dates were canceled while he remained hopeful and assured his fans that he was "not going to give up."
During an interview with Today, back in 2018, Lewis shared:
"I haven’t come to grips with the fact that I may never sing again."
According to the Mayo Clinic, the scientific definition of Meniere's disease is:
"An inner ear problem that can cause dizzy spells, also called vertigo, and hearing loss. Most of the time, Meniere's disease affects only one ear...It's thought to be a lifelong condition. But some treatments can help ease symptoms and lessen how it affects your life long term."
More updates about Huey Lewis' hearing loss disease
Huey Lewis recently gave People a little health update, opening up more about the disease he has been battling for almost seven years. Over the years, Lewis has gotten a cochlear implant, which has helped him hear better.
He told People how his symptoms have lessened, but his hearing has been affected. He said:
"I lost bilaterally, my hearing … the intense vertigo — knock on wood — I have kind of outgrown... I’m mildly dizzy all the time, and my hearing just went to zero. And now I have a cochlear implant, so I’m much better that way, but I can’t hear music."
For a music lover like Huey, losing the ability to hear and listen to music is difficult. He elaborated:
"The worst part is that means it’s bad enough not to be able to perform and sing and play, but it’s really bad not to even be able to enjoy music."
Despite all the hurdles, Huey Lewis has hope of coming back to the stage and performing. For Lewis, being on stage or recording is:
"the best feeling in the world."
He expressed:
"But I’m never going to get there... I mean, I might get to where I can try to, and I’m not going to give up. I’m going to try. But geez, that kind of fun, that kind of great ride. I doubt I’m ever going to see that … feel that again.
Huey Lewis has only released two singles in his journey as a musician; however, as the lead singer of Huey Lewis and the News, they have released ten studio albums so far. Their latest album, Weather, was released in 2020, two years after Lewis' diagnosis.
