Fletcher has announced her new album titled 'Would You Still Love Me If You Really Knew Me? ', which is scheduled to be released on July 18. Additionally, the singer has released her new song, "Boy," which is now available on streaming platforms.
In an exclusive interview with Rolling Stone revolving around personal topics and her album, when asked about her identity, Fletcher said,
"I’m a queer woman, that’s not changing…. I’m so lucky I’ve gotten to experience so much magic in this life because of my openness and my curiosity. For me it’s always been this living, breathing expression. It doesn’t shift or evolve for everyone. But for me, it’s always been this living, breathing thing."
In another question, when asked if the people's assumptions bothered her, she replied,
"I’m a queer woman. I’ve always been queer. I will always be queer. My identity is not shifting and it’s not changing. My community is not changing. But I’ve had these new experiences that I wanted to let people in on and give them a chance to know me now."
Fletcher has previously spoken about her sexuality and has proudly embraced her queer identity.
Fletcher talks about her new single 'Boy'
In the Rolling Stone interview, Fletcher shared that her song Boy is about a guy she once kissed. The singer marked the song as 'another love story' and revealed that she had started developing romantic feelings about the guy, and the experience left her confused.
However, she explained that Boy is only one of the songs and doesn’t represent the whole album. The rest of the album explores different stories and emotions she has been through.
The singer also admitted to being scared of how people would react to the single after its release by saying,
"It’s so scary to share your truth, you know. My career launched with a song called “Wasted Youth” in my early twenties about falling in love with a girl. Here I am, 10 years later at the start of my thirties, with a song about falling in love with a boy."
In the next line, she acknowledged that while her love life isn’t major news, especially within the queer community, she still feels it's important to stay true to herself.
The new album revolves around the topic of self-love and learning to be oneself without being scared. By the end of the interview, Fletcher opened up on the album and said,
"I’m stepping into this bravery even if I’m scared, in hopes that other people are able to do that in their own lives."
She continued,
"Life is way too fucking short. Truly. To do anything else. At the end of the day, even if everybody hated me, I’m still myself."
Fletcher's upcoming album, Would You Still Love Me If You Really Knew Me?, comprises eleven songs. The tracklist is now out on streaming platforms.
