Lalo Schifrin, iconic film and TV composer known for ‘Mission: Impossible’ score, passes away at 93

Popular Argentine-American composer, arranger, pianist, and conductor, Lalo Schifrin, born Boris Claudio "Lalo" Schifrin, has passed away. The music legend known for the iconic Mission: Impossible score passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at the age of 93 from Pneumonia complications. His son confirmed the news.

Lalo Schifrin was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina to a Jewish couple in 1932. When he was six years old, Lalo studied a piano course with Enrique Barenboim, who is the father of popular conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim. After completing it, Lalo went on to further his piano study with Andreas Karalis, the former head of the Kyiv Conservatory. He also studied harmony with composer Juan Carlos Paz.


Lalo Schifrin’s musical career: more details

Lalo Schifrin began his musical career in 1956 as a jazz composer, writing several musical scores for Dizzy Gillespie. He later joined Gillespie as a pianist in his quartet. In 1964, Lalo transitioned to work as a film composer.

He wrote the acclaimed Mission: Impossible score and many others, including the scores for The Doomsday Flight, Blindfold, Dark Intruder, Cool Hand Luke, The Liquidator, See How They Run, How I Spent My Summer Vacation, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Schifrin won five Grammy Awards in his lifetime, including four Grammy Awards for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, Best Instrumental Performance, and Best Original Jazz Composition, and one Latin Grammy for Best Classical Contemporary Composition. Lalo also bagged six Academy Awards, one CableAce Award, and four Primetime Emmy nominations in his lifetime.

The 93-year-old music composer was also honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2018, he received an Academy Honorary Award in recognition of his successful music career.

Lalo Schifrin is survived by his wife Donna, three children: William Schifrin, Frances Schifrin, and Ryan Schifrin, and four grandchildren.
