Spotify has officially introduced a new way to personalize playlists for its Premium subscribers. However, it seems that not everyone online is impressed.
The streaming platform has launched its new Mix feature, which allows users to add professional-style transitions between tracks. It is expected to give playlists a more DJ-like feel. The Mix feature is currently rolling out in beta for Premium users on iOS and Android. Once available, it shows up as a new Mix button in the playlist toolbar.
Users can choose between Auto mode, which automatically blends tracks, or manual options that include adjusting volume curves, EQ, filters, and effects. Preset transitions such as Fade or Rise will also be available. Spotify also displays each track's beats per minute (BPM) and key. These tools are often used by DJs. Nevertheless, one netizen remarked:
"Anything but reducing ads"
Internet reactions to Spotify's new 'Mix' feature
Pop Base took to its official X (formerly Twitter) page to share that:
"Spotify announces new premium feature which lets users add customizable transitions."
Netizens were quick to jump into the comment section of the X post to pen their thoughts. Below are what some of them had to say:
"As a playlist addict, this is what I have wanted forever. No more awkward silence between songs!",
expressed an X user. Another user asked:
"spotify really said "be your own dj now" transitions about to save every party who else already planning 10 sec fade into travis scott?"
"Apple will implement this in 5 years & Apple Music stans will still try and convince us Apple is making groundbreaking updates",
noted a third. Others also chimed in:
"I know this is a good feature, but I feel like I am going to f**k up my music somehow. I'm no DJ",
stated a netizen. Commented another:
"I get the beatmatching hype, but honestly, it is just a gimmick to distract from Spotify’s still crappy audio quality compared to Apple Music. Why bother with fancy transitions when the sound itself sucks?"
A netizen sarcastically suggested:
"Next quarter let's announce a new premium feature where you pay artists more and charge customers less. Genius, I know."
How to use the new Mix feature?
Using the new feature is relatively straightforward:
- Open a playlist in the Spotify app.
- Tap the Mix button in the toolbar.
- Choose Auto to instantly apply transitions, or Custom to adjust them yourself.
- One can use presets like Fade or Rise, or fine-tune using volume automation, EQ, echo, and filters.
- There are waveform and BPM data to decide the best spots for transitions.
- Save your mixed playlist, share it, or collaborate with other Premium users.
Notably, tapping the Mix button again will revert the playlist to its original form.
Alongside the mixing tools, the platform has also added new cover art customization options, including stickers and labels designed for mixed playlists.
