Michael Tait, formerly of Newsboys, has been accused of sexual misconduct and dealing with drugs. Tait had earlier announced his departure from the band in January 2025. A recent report published by The Roys Report, based on 50 people’s accounts, showed that the allegations happened mostly between 2004 and 2014. Three budding artists have reported similar allegations in the report.

According to the accusations, out of the three people alleged to have been assaulted, two were musicians who opened for Newsboys, and the other one was a crew member. Allegations about Michael Tait have involved claims of grooming people, assaulting them sexually, committing unsanctioned acts, and touching them inappropriately. People affected by Tait’s actions have now spoken, outlining things that happened to them that depict several incidents of alleged mistreatment.

To make matters more complicated for the CCM artist, allegations of drug use were also included in the comprehensive investigation. The victims were said to be afraid of professional retaliation, and the fear of being ignored led them to hold back from speaking up until this moment. Many people in the music industry are surprised by these allegations, considering how well-known Michael Tait is for his faith-based work.

Newsboys' statement on Michael Tait's alleged wrongdoings

Michael Tait's former bandmates from Newsboys were just as taken aback by the nature of the allegations leveled against their former frontman. After seriously considering the allegations, the band let fans know how they felt with a collective statement:

"Last night our hearts were shattered when we read the news alleging drug abuse and inappropriate sexual actions by our former lead singer, Michael Tait. While Michael has not addressed these allegations, we are devastated even by the implications. First and foremost, our hearts are with the victims who have bravely shared their stories. If you are a victim, we urge you to come forward. We absolutely do not condone any form of sexual assault."

After Tait's hasty exit from Newsboys earlier this year, the band has been reduced to four members. All four have raised concerns regarding Tait's past behaviour and have thrown their weight behind the alleged victims. The statement then goes on to add:

“The four of us are husbands and fathers. Between the four of us, we have fourteen children. Our wives and children have made many sacrifices while we have dedicated our lives to playing music together that glorifies God. We are horrified, heartbroken, and angry at this report and in many ways, we feel as if we and our families have been deceived for the last fifteen years. When he left the band in January, Michael confessed to us and our management that he ‘had been living a double-life’ but we never imagined that it could be this bad.”

In the joint statement released by Michael Tait's former bandmates, they shed light on the possible reasons for his hasty exit from the band he had been associated with for the better part of two decades. The serious nature of the allegations has swept up the Christian music community and has raised questions about the power dynamics at play in the industry, which reportedly allowed an established star to take advantage of several budding artists.

Michael Tait has not addressed the allegations publicly as of now, and no specific legal proceedings have been announced yet.
