The internet has been buzzing over what appears to be a fresh pop feud — and while fans dissect the details, Nicki Minaj is simply enjoying the soundtrack.
On Aug. 14, Thursday, Lana Del Rey posted a song snippet via an Instagram Reel, captioning it with “Track 13.” The unreleased track, however, contains the lines:
“Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post / Think it’s cute reenacting my Chicago pose.”
Lana Del Rey and her fellow alt-pop artist have been feuding, supposedly since 2022, exchanging subtle jabs on social media, drawing on imagery from photos they each took with Salem’s Jack Donaghue, and nodding to a New York Times headline calling Ethel Cain “the most famous girl at the Waffle House.”
The Sun Bleached Flies singer later shared on Instagram Stories that the West Coast artist had blocked her.
Then, on Aug. 15, Nicki Minaj swooped herself into the bizarre feud. She took to X (formerly Twitter) to admit she couldn’t get the tune out of her head.
“I’ve been singing ‘Ethel cain hated my instagram post’ all morning. Help!!!!!”
She continued, marveling over the track’s polish:
“And something about the Waffle House & a picture w/ some boy? But how can a melody & instruments & background vocals & the mixing be so good that I’m walking around all day talking about a person named Ethel who I do not know hating an instagram post I never even posted?”
Internet sounds off as Nicki Minaj weighs in on the supposed Lana Del Rey-Ethel Cain feud
Fans rapidly took to the internet after Nicki Minaj’s posts, many urging the rapper to collaborate with an alt-pop star. One wrote on X.
"still not too late to collab #LANICKI.”
"we sister fandoms now,"
an LDR fan commented. Another tweeted about the situation:
"weird bc i was just thinking about that situation yesterday. i'm not sure if she wanted to wack y'all but i guess she did but honestly? if you really wanna get into her, listen to Norman F Rockwell (full album) Radio Love Ride Born To D** Summertime Sadness u can thank me later [white heart emoji]."
"barbz and lanitas have waited for this moment for a decade im screaming,"
an online user chimed in. A fan said:
"It’s funny cuz she looks so innocent but she gets down . Girl had me ever since 'video games'. 'National anthem' had me intrigued also."
Some fans recommended additional Lana Del Rey songs and albums to Nicki Minaj, while others were simply pleased that she is getting into LDR’s music.
Nicki Minaj recalls Lana Del Rey's "question of the culture" post: "I fkng love this s**t yo"
Meanwhile, the Super Bass hitmaker also reminisced about Lana Del Rey’s viral, since-deleted 2020 “question for the culture” post.
In it, the Young and Beautiful songstress had named artists like Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé, and Doja Cat while questioning criticism that her own work “glamorized abuse.” At the time, she wrote:
"I'm fed up with female writers and alt singers saying that I glamorize abuse when in reality I'm just a glamorous person singing about the realities of what we are all now seeing are very prevalent emotionally abusive relationships all over the world."
To this, Nicki Minaj reacted:
“Remember that time Lana dissed all the girlies but we had no idea why but none of us said anything back? Lmaooooo not we let Lana walk in the lunchroom & run EVERYBODY pockets wit no weapon & no gang & said not one thing about it. Lmfaooooo AYO I fkng love this s**t yo.”
Nicki Minaj wrapped up her thread by reflecting on the way a single song can convert casual listeners into devoted fans:
“I always hear my label & new fans of all diff artists talking about that but now I RLLY get it."
She ended her series of LDR-related tweets with:
"And there ya have it. Lana has me singing about a person named Ethel Cain due to this DOPE melody, vocal & instrumentation. It just made me think how many times ppl were probably PROUDLY rapping someone’s name in one of my songs & had no clue who or what I was talking about"
