Benson Boone, known for hits like "Beautiful Things" and "In The Stars," reflected on Katy Perry’s advice following his exit from American Idol in 2021. Boone appeared on the recent episode of The Scott Mills Breakfast Show. Speaking about what Perry might have thought regarding his departure from the music reality show, he said:

“I actually think she is really glad that I left the show. She was like really happy for me, also really worried about me. I think she understands that when you’re starting to go through all this, there’s just a lot of hate coming your way, a lot of people that want things from you.”

Benson Boone added:

“So, she was more just checking in on me. She was like, ‘Leaving that show was like the best thing you ever did.’”

Katy Perry appeared happy about Boone’s exit. However, when host Scott Mills asked if the judge was critical of the show, Benson Boone clarified that this wasn't the case. He explained that Perry understood the situation, especially since he wasn’t even sure about pursuing music at that time. He also mentioned:

“I went to the top 24, but they only aired my first episode, and then right after the episode aired, I was like, no way, absolutely no way. So I just got off the show and was very fortunate to do so.”

What did Katy Perry say after Benson Boone’s American Idol performance in the audition round?

During his American Idol audition, Boone performed Aidan Martin's 2018 song, "Punchline." After his performance, he received a standing ovation from the judges, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.

At that moment, Katy Perry wanted to confirm whether Benson Boone had ever sung while growing up. He explained that although his family sang, he didn’t enjoy it back then. Lionel Richie noted that Boone didn’t take singing seriously earlier and considered his ability pure natural talent, unlike others who need years of practice.

Luke Bryan added that Boone wasn’t arrogant but humble and still new to the music world, encouraging him to enjoy exploring his exceptional voice. Katy Perry noted that fans were going to be drawn to him. She added:

“I mean I am going to tell you something that you may not believe but if you believe it, it might happen. I mean I am like literally I see American Idol and I see you winning American Idol, if you want.”

Benson Boone said:

“Oh my! That is the biggest compliment I have ever got. Thank you.”

He explained that during the COVID lockdown, when in-person auditions weren’t taking place, the show contacted various people, including him, after he posted a few videos online. Since he was in college at the time, Benson Boone figured he had nothing to lose and decided to try it out, thinking it might be an enjoyable experience.
