Country singer Carly Pearce was a recent guest on Bunnie Xo’s Dumb Blonde podcast, where she discussed growing up, struggles, divorce, amongst other aspects of her life.
Pearce was married to songwriter Michael Ray for less than a year. They tied the knot in October 2019, but she filed for legal separation in June 2020.
While speaking to Bunnie Xo, Pearce shared that she had known Ray for some time before they started dating, as they played shows together. Bunnie asked if Ray slid in her DMs, to which the singer replied that it was her. Carly Pearce said:
“I thought he was so cute. I had heard like, ‘He’s the nicest guy in the world,’ and I invited him to my No. 1 party [Billboard Country Airplay] for Every Little Thing.”
She added:
“Looking back on it, it was a very hot and heavy lust. It wasn’t love. It was just passionate.”
Carly Pearce remembered that it was the time when his career was gaining momentum, although she said Ray was already successful. However, she said she married him for the sake of it.
According to Pearce, the marriage was for the right reasons. She mentioned that they didn't have the real conversations that were needed before marriage. The country singer noted:
“We didn't really know about each other and we were kind of living this life that wasn't really reality now looking back on it. So, I just think we didn't really know each other.”
Carly Pearce said she should have left on the day of her marriage
As the conversation with Bunnie Xo rolled on, Pearce admitted that on the night she got married, she already felt it wasn’t right. She said the pandemic turned out to be a blessing because it gave her privacy to deal with the breakup.
Carly Pearce explained that she felt embarrassed, ashamed, and heartbroken, and if she had to go through it in front of everyone, she probably would have stayed in the relationship longer than she should have.
Speaking about the divorce, she said:
“It wasn't what I signed up for. It just wasn't the marriage that I know I deserved. I knew that very quickly. And I think in the first we were only married for eight months. Plenty happened to where it was very clear to me this just wasn't a marriage.”
When Bunnie Xo asked if any infidelity issues led to the separation, Pearce said:
“What he didn’t do wasn’t written just out of thin air. Album 29 wasn’t, you know, written out of like yeah. I mean it wasn’t good. It wasn’t good and you know. What’s been so hard is everybody has a different opinion.”
Carly Pearce shared that she was in the happiest time of her life. She said that if her ex ever saw her message, she would thank him because the experience taught her more about herself and showed her how strong she was.
Pearce explained that the challenges she went through made her better, and even though things were hard, she didn’t wish anything bad for him. She was happy that part of her life was over.
