Singer Sarah McLachlan released her new music, Gravity, recently. This song is a part of her tenth studio album, Better Broken, which will be released on September 19. Variety recently published an interview piece with the singer about her new song. During the interview, when asked about the significance of the song as a part of the album, she said it was a powerful track. The piece also mentioned a statement by the singer, in which she said,

“For a long time my daughter and I had a very combative and fraught relationship, and what I came to realize is that so much of what I perceived as obstinance or rage was actually masking a ton of anxiety on her part.”

Sarah McLachlan mentioned,

“I wrote ‘Gravity’ as a way of saying to her, ‘I’ve always loved you and want the best for you, and you’re perfect the way you are.’”

According to Us Weekly, the singer has two children, 23-year-old India and 18-year-old Taja, whom she shares with Ashwin Sood, her ex-husband.

In the interview, Sarah McLachlan said she had been able to share the song Gravity with others for a year or two, and people connected with it very quickly and strongly. She explained that her earlier single Better Broken had a more relaxed and groovy style, but Gravity returned to the kind of emotional ballads she was best known for.

The reason behind keeping the song as one of the pre-release singles is that she felt people could relate to it.

What did Sarah McLachlan say about getting her daughter’s permission for the song?

During the Variety interview, when asked if she got her daughter’s permission to talk about their relationship in the song, Sarah McLachlan said she did. She played it for her daughter and asked her if she was okay with the singer discussing their relationship in the song. Her daughter said she didn't have any issue with that.

Her daughter supported family systems counseling and often spoke openly about what she learned from it, including their shared experiences. Sarah explained that she always checked in with her daughter to make sure she was still comfortable with her talking about it publicly, since it involved her challenges, too.

When asked if Better Broken falls under the category of a good breakup song, Sarah McLachlan said,

“Oh, absolutely, yeah. But that’s about really recognizing that being on the other side of it is so much sweeter, and that we don’t get to that place in our lives unscathed.”

She went on,

“You have to go through hard things and challenges and struggles to come out on the other side. The hope is you’re better for it and you learn from it and you move on and make better choices.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Sarah McLachlan said performing her new songs for fans was exciting because it brought fresh energy to her shows. She mentioned that she still enjoyed playing her old songs but felt connected to the new ones since she had worked on them for the past year, even though the audience wasn’t as familiar with them yet.
