Conan Gray narrates a queer summer romance in new music video “This Song”

Conan Gray’s newest single, “This Song,” arrived with a cinematic, sun-soaked music video that has quickly struck a chord with fans, both for its emotional intimacy and the tender LGBTQ+ narrative at its center.

Starring Conan Gray and Corey Fogelmaxnis (My Life with the Walter Boys), the video follows two young men experiencing a fleeting but powerful summer love story. Through glances, laughter, riverside roughhousing, and quiet nighttime drives, the story unfolds with unsaid feelings slowly making their way through the cracks.

At one point, Gray delivers a vulnerable confession:

“But now I’ll say it straight… I wrote this song about you.”

The moment builds to a quiet crescendo, leading to a kiss between the pair on a rooftop at sunset, conveying a sense of quiet yearning that permeates the track.

“This Song” is the latest preview from Gray’s upcoming album Wishbone, due out August 15.

In a personal statement about the new chapter on his Instagram, Gray shared the process that shaped the record:

“Over the past two years, i’ve been secretly writing songs. after shows in the basements of the venues, in the sheets of my hotel beds, in narrow gaps between tours— I’d come back home and write all the things i felt nobody wanted to hear.”

He continued:

“Maybe even the things i didn’t want people to hear. I didn’t tell my friends. I didn’t tell my label. after all, I didn’t know i was making anything, and I had no plan to release any of it.”

What started as scattered reflections soon took form.

“I didn’t know what story I was telling, I was just living in it. Slowly I started to see myself in full picture. The slivers of myself I’d always been, but never faced. The songs I’d always been writing, but never singing.”
