Brazilian police authorities prevented a major mishap at Lady Gaga's Copacabana Beach concert as they neutralized the detonation attempts that were reportedly being carried out. The concert had attracted north of 2 million fans from all corners of the country, and the bomb threat could've made matters worse, but the police's vigilance put paid to the plot. The authorities have now arrested 2 individuals in relation to the attempted attack.
The details of the incident were not disclosed to the public until after the event was over. The Brazilian police authorities later released a statement stating the following:
"The suspects were recruiting participants, including minors, to carry out coordinated attacks using improvised explosives and Molotov cocktails. The population can be tranquil as there’s an ongoing intelligence work over these groups. Whether they involve hate crimes, religiously motivated crimes, or attacks – all (of) them will respond for their crimes"
The shocking turn of events has left the fans in disbelief on social media, even as they expressed relief at the failed detonation attempts:
"That’s terrifying, huge respect to Brazilian authorities for stopping it in time and keeping millions safe", commented one fan.
"This is so scary, i’m glad police were able to stop it in time… gaga concerts are a safe space for so many of us i can’t even imagine something like this happening, especially with so many people :(", remarked another.
"OMG! That Lady Gaga concert bomb plot is insane Glad the Brazilian police caught them! Can you imagine what could have happened with 2 million people there? So scary! Hope everyone is safe and Gaga can still rock Copacabana!", added another fan.
"I feel like if you manage to stop something like this, it’s probably best not to tell the public about it", another fan chimed in.
"I’m glad everyone is safe cause that would’ve been mayhem for real", stressed another fan.
"These are the mfers who deserve life sentences, cuz you gotta be an evil piece of s**t to wanna bomb innocent people going to a concert", wrote another.
The aftermath of the incident at Lady Gaga's Copablanca
Lady Gaga and the fans in attendance at the concert were oblivious to the bomb threat, and the event went ahead without any glitches. The fact that the free event was planned as a part of a campaign to help recover Rio de Janeiro's struggling tourism and economy makes the incident all the more remarkable. Brazilian police officials still handled the issue internally and acted quickly in the days leading to the concert, which must still be commended.
One representative from Lady Gaga's team later came out with a statement:
"We learned about this alleged threat via media reports this morning. Prior to and during the show, there were no known safety concerns, nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks. Her team worked closely with law enforcement throughout the planning and execution of the concert and all parties were confident in the safety measures in place"
Regardless of the issues surrounding the concert, Lady Gaga's concert was still a major success as fans packed the Copacabana to see the artist perform her signature songs. The event will hopefully help the organizers to pull off what they set out to achieve and help to revitalize the Brazilian economy.
Meanwhile, Lady Gaga will continue her promotional tour before the Mayhem Ball Tour kicks off on July 16 in Las Vegas.
