Kevin Jonas has opened up about the emotional side of being on the road nonstop and what happens when it all comes to a halt.
In his exclusive interview with People, which is tied to the U.S. launch of -196 vodka seltzer, the 37-year-old musician shared how difficult it was to come down after finishing more than 130 shows with the Jonas Brothers on their latest world tour.
“All the depression, blues, it's real, especially after a tour. After our last tour, we did over 100 and something shows — it was too many — and we ended in Europe. I got on my plane to come home after I believe 130 shows, and I got on my flight — which was delayed terribly, which is never fun.”
His return home was even more draining than expected, citing delays and burnout.
“I took the first flight out from Poland to go through Munich to get home and [was] delayed for like seven hours, and then they had [to] make a random stop in Nova Scotia. So it literally took me like an extra 18 hours to get home, and I was already fatigued and burnt out by the time I got home.”
Kevin Jonas went on to share how his wife was worried about him, adding that the experience made him decide to seek therapy.
“I actually had to go start talking to a therapist about it, how to process the highs and the lows. It’s so jarring.”
Behind the curtain: Kevin Jonas talks brother Nick’s inner struggles amid musical stint
Kevin Jonas also spoke about how demanding performing can be, especially for his brother Nick, who currently stars in the Broadway musical The Last Five Years. The eldest said that his younger brother has to fully immerse himself in his role, and it’s not something he easily leaves behind at the theater.
“[Nick’s] really has to live in this and I think he takes it home with him too, which is really hard if you know the show. It’s emotional. Well, [Nick] leaves this theater — I think every single night — in a way, like, depressed and coming off of this emotional roller coaster. So, it's a lot to bear, and it's hard to take that with you.”
Kevin Jonas revealed that he could only imagine how much more intense it must be to do a Broadway show every night, especially one as emotionally charged as the one Nick is currently starring in.
“Because what I do every night with my brothers, it's joy, it's fun. The whole time. There's nothing emotional. There are emotional moments, we have songs that are hard to sing and whatever, but it's mostly fun. So even that I come off of that and it's tough.”
