Former Little Mix member Jade Thirlwall has openly criticized Matty Healy's stance on politics as "disappointing" and stated that pop artists cannot simply "cover their eyes." The 1975 frontman declared during his headline set at Glastonbury 2025 that he did not want his band's "legacy" to be about politics. The statement sparked a wave of reactions.

Fans on both sides are now weighing in online. The discussion is notable because Jade is officially preparing to release her debut solo album, That's Showbiz Baby!, in September 2025, followed by her first headline tour this autumn. One fan supported Jade's remarks on Matty Healy and stated:

"nothing but the truth yes mother"

How did it start?

During The 1975's recent performance on the Pyramid Stage, Healy addressed the crowd near the end of the set to say:

"Use your platform, that's what they say right? We do not want our legacy to be one of politics, but to be one of love and friendship."

He noted that "loads of politics" already exist in the world.

Jade also performed her own set at the Woodsies Stage during the festival. Speaking with The Guardian, she argued:

"I don't think you can be a pop artist and cover your eyes. I saw Matty Healy say that he does not want to be political, which I found disappointing. It is very easy for someone who's white and straight and very privileged to say that. Good for you, hun!"

Internet reactions to Jade's remarks on Healy

Pop Base took to its official X (formerly Twitter) page to share:

"JADE tells The Guardian that she finds it disappointing when singers avoid politics"

Netizens were quick to weigh in on the comment section of that X post to share their opinions:

"The man is a singer, let him sing. He don't have to be political. You do you and let others do them.", penned an X user.
"He has said racist slurs on stage and openly talked about watching porn videos where black women are brutally beaten and dominated. That's political. He has already been political. Now he is choosing to chicken out", noted another.
"Silence is a privilege not everyone can afford. Jade's words cut sharp at the comfort of staying apolitical.", opined a third.

Others also chimed in:

"honest and truthful queen. whack him and every other person that is privileged enough to not speak about politics", lauded a netizen.
"Okay, would she keep the same energy if he did come out and be political and he spoke opinions that she disagreed with, or...?", question another.
"He is a singer, nothing more. Celebrities need to shut the hell up about politics, most of them are ignorant, delusional, and have zero connection to the struggles of real everyday Americans.", commented a third.

Jade's own Glastonbury performance leaned into activism. She led chants against welfare cuts, transphobia, and more. She also addressed the ongoing conflict in Palestine.
