Billy Ray Cyrus has shared his thoughts after his daughter, Miley Cyrus, opened up about their relationship and the song she wrote for him. The father and daughter have had a long and public history, filled with both close moments and challenges. Recently, the two seem to have found a sense of peace through music.
On Sunday, October 5, Billy Ray Cyrus posted on Instagram after watching Miley’s interview on CBS Sunday Morning.
He quoted her words about music, writing, “One great song can do more for the soul than a million therapy sessions. I agree! Music changes everything!! ”
He added that he was thankful to God after spending time with family earlier that day.
Billy Ray Cyrus’ post included their 2009 song Butterfly Fly Away and a throwback photo of the two of them. The post came just hours after Miley revealed that her dad cried when she gave him the song Secrets for his birthday.
Miley’s song ‘Secrets’ and its meaning
In her CBS Sunday Morning interview, Miley explained that her father got emotional when she gave him the song.
“You know, you don’t see your dad cry a lot. But with me and my dad, we just have always communicated better through music with each other,” she said. When asked if they were at peace now, Miley replied simply, “Yeah.”
The song Secrets appears on Miley’s Something Beautiful album, released in May. It reflects their complicated relationship and her desire to rebuild trust with her father. She described it as a way to express understanding and forgiveness.
Miley had earlier discussed the song on the Reclaiming With Monica Lewinsky podcast.
“I wrote this song about my dad, because I wanted him to tell me, even though they were secrets, even though I didn’t really wanna know, I wanted to be the one he felt safe enough to tell me the things that were damning and damaging to the family,” she said.
She added that she always wanted her family to see her as “the safe place.”

Billy Ray Cyrus' public response and family ties

Two months after the song was released, Billy Ray thanked Miley in a heartfelt post.
“For my birthday, Miley gave me the gift of music and wrote me a song called ‘Secrets’ and got my favorite musicians Fleetwood Mac to play on it! I love you Miley ,” he wrote on Instagram.
His recent comments show that the song continues to mean a lot to him.
Billy Ray Cyrus shares Miley with his ex-wife, Tish Cyrus. During their marriage, Billy Ray Cyrus adopted Tish’s children Brandi and Trace, and the couple also had three more children — Miley, Braison, and Noah. He also has an older son, Christopher, from a previous relationship.
The family’s story has often played out in public, especially when Billy Ray and Miley starred together on Hannah Montana. In a May interview for The New York Times’ The Interview podcast, Miley said she now understands her parents differently.
“As I’ve gotten older, I’m respecting my parents as individuals instead of as parents,” she said.
She added that she had carried some of her mother’s pain during their marriage.
