Chappell Roan brought her signature theatricality to her Primavera Sound 2025 set, giving fans more than just a performance. During the bridge of her song “The Giver,” the artist paused to call out specific names — exes submitted by fans — before launching into the next chorus.
With her backing vocals carrying on in harmony, Roan turned to the camera and said:
“Now, I asked some of you to give me the names of your exes, and why they didn’t get the job done. So I have a monk, and we’re going to draw the names out of the hat.”
There was, in fact, a monk, already bowed before her, holding an upside-down orange safety helmet filled with submissions from fans.
Chappell Roan pulled the names out one by one, calling them out with dramatic flair:
“First ex’s name is Tim. He only knew how to use his fingers to play video games.”
“The next one is [Matti]! Didn’t wash his balls!”
“Juan! Hooked up with my mom. They are all in the crowd tonight.”
Each name sent the crowd into a frenzy of boos, adding to the theatrical moment before Roan seamlessly launched back into singing “The Giver.”
The interactive stunt had been teased earlier via Instagram, where Roan posted a prompt to fans:
“Spainnn answer ur ex name & one sentence on why they couldn't get the job done. It's time for that to be public knowledge thank you.”
Internet reacts to Chappell Roan’s ex callouts: “She’s so fun and creative”
Chappell Roan’s dramatic ex name-drop moment at Primavera Sound quickly sparked a wave of reactions online, especially on X (formerly Twitter).
“She is the level of petty I would be if I were famous and I love that,” said @runfastforfatm.
“Say what you say about her but she will always be an amazing perfomer like whatttt,” @Gudokdu wrote.
“shes so fun and creative chappell we love you,” @n_1multistan commented with heart emojis.
“omg she’s so fun,” @manticore_tiny added.
But not all responses were glowing. Some users raised concerns about consent and the public nature of the stunt.
“Just when I’m starting to find her charming, she leans back into this shame shit. Hopefully these xs consented to being talked shit about in front of thousands of people and have it streamed for the entire world to see,” @Beeb0011 said.
“Wtf is this..” @Shutttupps11 added.
Chappell Roan crashes Charli XCX’s Primavera Sound set with her “Apple” dance cameo
Meanwhile, Chappell Roan made an unexpected and crowd-pleasing appearance at Primavera Sound in Barcelona on June 5 during Charli XCX’s high-octane festival set.
Wearing a cut-up sweatshirt layered over a black top and grey skirt, Roan completed the look with oversized bug-eye sunglasses as she joined in on the viral “Apple” dance from Charli’s Brat era.
Her moment came from what appeared to be a balcony vantage point alongside a group of fans, where she lip-synched to the lyrics:
“I think the apple’s rotten right to the core…”
As Roan’s moves lit up the big screens on either side of the stage, the crowd erupted. Charli XCX was clearly thrilled, shouting from the stage:
“Make some f**king noise right now! Chappell I f**kin’ love you b**ch!”
The moment arrived late into Charli’s 31-song set, continuing a Brat tour tradition where the camera pans to an audience member (in this case, a fellow artist) to spotlight the signature dance.
Chappell Roan joins a growing list of celebrity participants that includes names like Rosé (BLACKPINK), Kerry Washington, Clairo, and more.
Roan then headlined her own Primavera Sound set on Saturday night, June 7, as part of an impressive roster that also includes Sabrina Carpenter, Haim, Wet Leg, and Beach House.
