Taylor Swift reveals what Max Martin said when she asked him to collaborate on new album: “Do you understand what pressure that is?”

Taylor Swift’s new album, The Life of a Showgirl, will see a collaboration with Swedish producer Max Martin. On the latest episode of the New Heights podcast, where she broke the news about the album, Swift said that she made the album with her mentor, Max Martin, and Shellback.

Swift said that altogether, they have made some of her favorite songs from the past. She shared that while she was on tour in Stockholm, she invited Max Martin to her show and told him she believed they could create something amazing if the three of them worked together in Sweden.

The singer wanted the album to make her feel as proud as she felt about the Eras Tour. Recalling Max Martin’s words, Taylor Swift said:

“And he was like, ‘Do you understand what kind of pressure that is?’ I was like, ‘Yeah.’”

Taylor Swift explained that it was the first time she and her two close collaborators made an album entirely on their own, without anyone else involved. She said it felt like something magical because they hadn’t worked together in seven or eight years, and each of them was talented in their own way.

When asked why she chose orange as the primary color of the album, Swift said:

“I've just always liked it, Jason. I don't know, it feels like it feels like kind of energetically how my life has felt. And this album is about what was going on behind the scenes in my inner life during this tour, which was so exuberant and electric and vibrant.”

Taylor Swift said that she, Max Martin, and Shellback had spent time working on various projects. She worked on albums like Folklore and Evermore, which had a softer, alternative folk style, helping her grow as a songwriter.

Max and Shellback also tried new things in their own ways. When they reunited, she felt they had all improved their skills and matured. She remembered that when they first started working together, she and Shellback were in their early 20s.

This time, it felt like all three of them contributed equally as creators, which made the experience special. Taylor Swift said:

“It like meant the world to me to have this creative experience where like we knew that we had to bring the best ideas we've ever had. And I know I also know the pressure I'm putting on this record by saying that, but I don't care cause I love it that much. And I'm so proud of it. And it just comes from like the most infectiously joyful, wild, dramatic place I was in in my life.”

Taylor Swift said that her new album would only have 12 songs and there wouldn’t be any extra tracks released later. Unlike her previous album, which had 31 songs sharing everything she had felt over a few years, this one was the exact record she had wanted to make for a long time.
