Pitchfork recently dropped its review of Taylor Swift's twelfth studio album, The Life of a Showgirl. The outlet gave the record a 5.9 out of 10. The score has sent the internet into a frenzy. Swifties and critics have been debating whether the number is an honest critique or a snub. One user commented,

"A 5.9 from Pitchfork means it’s either a secret masterpiece or they just didn’t understand the assignment again 💀 they have been hating since “Red,” it’s basically tradition at this point."

Taylor Swift's latest album, The Life of a Showgirl, was officially released on October 3, 2025. Her previous album, The Tortured Poets Department, dominated multiple charts through 2024. Her Eras Tour concluded in Vancouver in December 2024. It became the highest-grossing concert tour of all time as it pulled in over $2 billion globally.

Internet reactions to Pitchfork scoring Taylor Swift's 'The Life of a Showgirl' 5.9/10

Pop Base took to its official X (formerly Twitter) page to share that,

"Pitchfork gives ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ by Taylor Swift a score of 5.9/10."

Fans were notably quick to weigh in on the comment section of the X post as they shared their opinions on the scoring. Below are some of their reactions:

"Pitchfork is a joke", declared an X user.
"is taylor going to quote pitchfork with 5.9 hearts or does she only do that to the critics that were paid to give her a good review", shared another.
"Let's be honest, an institution like Pitchfork giving a 5.9 to a cultural giant like Taylor Swift says more about their own fading relevance than it does about her music. She isn't making albums for critics anymore; she's building entire economic and emotional worlds for her fans.", penned a third.

Others also chimed in:

"Pitchfork's allergic to joy, 5.9 for a glittering confessional banger like this? Swift just reinvented the pop confessional while they clutch their indie pearls. Overrated gatekeepers.", commented a netizen.
"1. Over half the article is not even about the album 2. The author barely touches on anything of substance with the album, only talking about musical similarities with songs that are apparently better and more iconic and how using them makes this album nothing new and boring. 3. The author is clearly a Charli xcx fan more than Taylor because a massive chunk of the article is about actually romantic and the author has also written super positive reviews about brat singles 4. She claims to be a Taylor fan but has clearly only listened to the singles", opined another.
"meanwhile taylor: #1 single. #1 album. #1 movie #1 topic trending worldwide. most streamed artist currently", noted a third.

Notably, within 24 hours of release, Taylor Swift's The Life of a Showgirl sold 2.7 million copies in the U.S. It broke Swift's own record from The Tortured Poets Department. It also became the most-streamed album in a single day on Spotify this year. The Fate of Ophelia broke the record for the most-streamed song in a day.

The Official Release Party of a Showgirl was screened in 540 AMC theaters. The album release event grossed $46 million worldwide during its three-day run.
