Ty Dolla $ign has reportedly stepped away from Kanye West regarding their legal entanglements, according to reports. As per TMZ, Ty Dolla has independently settled a copyright infringement lawsuit related to his collaborative work with West on the album Vultures 1.
The duo was sued by Criminal Manne, DJ Squeeky, and Rayna B. Rufus last year over sampling disputes relating to the track Fuk Sumn from Vultures 1. Sources from TMZ Hip Hop have now confirmed that Ty Dolla $ign moved to take matters into his own hands and has now reached an agreement in principality with the plaintiffs.
It will take another month to finalize the details of the agreement, following which Ty Dolla's name will be cleared of the charges. However, it has been confirmed by sources that Kanye West's name remains subject to further litigation, with the plaintiffs expected to advance legal action against him in the coming weeks.
Ty Dolla $ign and Kanye West - A brief history
The working relationship between Ty Dolla $ign and Kanye began in 2014, and the duo has produced numerous hits across multiple albums since their first collab. West even appeared on Ty’s debut album Free TC, and their association was seen repeatedly over the years.
The two were seen together in a song as recently as February, when Kanye West featured in Ty Dolla $ign's album Wheels Fall Off. The duo was also set to work together on the Vultures trilogy, but the final installment reportedly had to be scrapped owing to West's controversial remarks and social media activity.
Ty Dolla and West had also courted controversy of a similar nature over their use of Donna Summer's I Feel Love in their album. The lawsuit filed against the duo cited copyright infringement in the legal complaint, but the matter was later settled in June 2024.
Donna Summer's estate had released a statement at the time, which stated the following:
"This lawsuit is about more than defendants’ mere failure to pay the appropriate licensing fee for using another’s musical property. It is also about the rights of artists to decide how their works are used and presented to the public, and the need to prevent anyone from simply stealing creative works when they cannot secure the right to use them legally."
Kanye West has found himself in the midst of such controversies multiple times in the past and has been criticized for what is believed to be unauthorised use of the work of other artists. Last year, the Backstreet Boys were joined by the late Ozzy Osbourne in criticizing the rapper for using their music in an unsanctioned manner.
Ty Dolla's relationship with West had taken a turn for the worse due to the latter's controversial remarks in the past year. It remains to be seen if the recent developments will have any bearing on their professional relationship.
