Streaming platform Spotify has announced a new messaging feature on the app. On August 26, Spotify shared the news with an Instagram post and a detailed blog on the new feature. Now, the app will let users share songs, podcasts, or audiobooks with their contacts within the app through the direct message feature.
The music app noted that the feature will start rolling out this week on mobile devices in select markets. However, the DM feature will be available to users above 16 years of age. The new feature will be available to both free and premium users. The news fetched some hilarious reactions from netizens.
"Will i be able to DM Taylor Swift??? 😜😜 I just love her 😍😍😍😍," a netizen reacted.
Spotify new DM feature created a buzz among online users
Although Spotify said that they have introduced the feature at the demand of its users, many netizens said it was uncalled for. Some other users said that the app should focus more on improving the music quality.
"I just want to listen to my music in peace i have no interest in chatting with my friends i think there are enough platforms to already do that. let something be as it is," a netizen wrote.
"Instead of focusing on providing your consumers with high quality audio There are alot of messaging app on the market just focus on better sound quality," a user expressed.
"One platform where you could mind your business in peace. Literally who asked for this in the first place?," an internet user added.
The app had a similar feature earlier; however, the company discontinued it in 2017. Many netizens recalled the feature from the past and said that it's good that the feature is returning.
"I remember I was like 25 when it was first removed I was sad asl, no way they’re bringing it back," a user wrote.
"Everyone being confused but don’t know this was an original feature some years back ," another netizen commented.
"this was a thing in like 2014 but spotify removed this feature... glad it's back because i used to annoy my friends sending them music," another user wrote.
Spotify released a press release detailing the new messaging feature. The streaming service described the utility of the feature in the following words:
"Messages are a fast and convenient way to share and chat about what you’re listening to with the people you care about. Messages also open up new opportunities for artists, authors, and creators—more users can spread the word about an artist’s track or creator’s podcast with their friends and family, helping drive discovery."
The messages feature on the app will let users share the app content with their loved ones. The company also shared how the new feature will work. Here is the guide provided by the platform.
- Share Spotify content and start a message in-app with people you’ve interacted with before through Spotify.
- When listening to a song, podcast, or audiobook in the Now Playing View, tap the share icon, select a friend, and hit send.
- Once you accept a message request, you’ll be able to react with emojis, send texts, and seamlessly share Spotify content back and forth. Access Messages by going to your profile photo in the top left corner.
