Young Thug has finally broken his silence on his fractured relationship with Gunna, opening up during a recent appearance on Perspektives With Bank.
In the candid interview, the Atlanta rapper spoke candidly about how the fallout affected not only their friendship but also his creativity.
“I lost a n**** to betrayal."
Young Thug added.
“You signing that one piece of paper could give me a life sentence… You gon’ let a piece of paper end all this sh*t?”
The conversation marked one of the first times Thug has spoken in such raw terms about his former protégé.
Once known for their near-brotherly bond, the two artists built much of YSL’s early success together, a run of collaborations and charting hits that cemented them as a powerhouse duo in Southern rap.
Young Thug even went so far as to call Gunna his “twin,” highlighting how deep the connection went beyond music.
The case that sparked the rift between Young Thug and Gunna
Young Thug and Gunna's closeness has since unraveled under the weight of legal troubles.
Both rappers were named in the 2022 YSL RICO case in Georgia, a sprawling indictment that alleged gang activity under the guise of a record label.
While Young Thug remains entangled in the case, Gunna was released in late 2022 after entering an Alford plea, sparking ongoing accusations that he cooperated with prosecutors.
His career was tainted, with allegations of him being a "snitch." Though Gunna has denied the claims, the damage to the bond was already way too deep.
The fallout became clear earlier this year when Thug, speaking to GQ in April, admitted uncertainty when asked about where their relationship stood. He said:
“I know everybody wonders [what our relationship is like now]. I don’t know.”
That sense of distance only deepened when alleged leaked jailhouse phone calls between Young Thug and 21 Savage surfaced online on Sept. 2. The audio clips quickly circulated on social media, reinforcing speculation that the rift between Thug and Gunna is beyond repair.
Nonetheless, when asked about his future plans for the record label YSL, Thuggie remains optimistic.
"We just pushing positivity. And just going for the gusto. We’re trying to just kill the whole rap game and just do it big and just help people in general. Help society, help the communities we from, and just be so great."
Meanwhile, the Perspektives interview quickly lit up social media, with fans weighing in on the duo's broken bond.
"Whatever it is they have going on it would have been better off if both men had talked about it face-to-face rather than how they handled it," one wrote on X (Twitter).
"i could tell he hurt asl but on the bright side, shi worked out for both of em. they both outta prison, instead of holding grudges they should js get back right w each other," another added.
"We all love to hate on thugga but man can't lie.. got a emotional hearin' this... Yeah y'all finna bash me but that's the truth," a fan commented.
