Country singer Orville Peck has showcased his acting talent in Broadway’s Cabaret. Critics have praised the mask-wearing South African-born singer and songwriter’s performance in the Broadway musical.

The multihyphenate artist stepped in for Adam Lambert as Emcee for the Broadway show at the August Wilson Theatre on March 31, 2025. Veteran actress Eva Noblezada’s performance as Sally Bowles in the revival tale of early Nazi Germany didn't go unnoticed by audiences, earning her a standing ovation after the June 25, 2025, show.

Noblezada masterfully captured the innocence and quiet strength of her character, Sally Bowles, as she chose to remain in the crumbling Weimar Republic. Peck’s performance of Tomorrow Belongs to Me was executed to depict his character’s true allegiance.

Noblezada performed Cabaret, a representation of her character’s attempt to distract herself and live in the moment rather than accept her bleak reality.

“I asked the people in my life if this was the right thing to do,” Orville Peck says as he recounts being offered the role of Emcee in Cabaret.

In an interview with Billboard, Peck revealed that the decision to play the Emcee role was a tough one for him compared to acting:

”The real trepidation came when the offer came in, and I knew I had the opportunity to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to doing this. I definitely had a lot of thinking to do. I asked the people in my life if this was the right thing to do, and the right moment for it. But it became an easy ‘yes.'”

The country singer and actor stated that Cabaret was one of his favorite musicals of all time, and he had wanted to play the role of Emcee for as long as he could remember. Orville Peck described his character as one with grit and attitude:

”My Emcee has a sort of grit and an almost punk attitude to him that I think is probably from that part of my life.”

He added:

“I draw on a lot of themes of what it’s like to be queer, or to grow up with internalized issues, with fears, with questions of feeling empowered in society.”

Orville Peck also stated that it took a lot of work for him to adjust to Emcee’s unique singing voice. He added that he wanted to completely separate Peck the country singer from Emcee the Broadway character and he had to work with a voice coach to bring the new persona to life.

Orville Peck and Noblezada will continue performing at the August Wilson Theatre till July 20, 2025.
