SBS Gayo Daejeon, as mentioned previously, was started in 1997. SBS stands for Seoul Broadcasting System, the premier broadcasting entity of South Korea. The festival initially started out as an awards show, with editions till 2006 focusing on recognising outstanding talent in the Korean music industry annually.
During this phase, the event had annual Grand Prize winners, starting with H.O.T. in 1997 and then others like BoA in 2002, and Lee Hyori in 2003. The award show evolved into a music festival in 2007, featuring artists such as Girls' Generation and Wonder Girls in that edition. The awards show returned in 2014 but was subsequently discontinued again in favour of the festival in 2015.
Subsequent editions of the festival would go on to feature performances by Big Bang, Brown Eyed Girls, Hong Jin-young, and Sistar, among others, in the initial years till 2014.
After 2015, the festival started to switch venues regularly, with the 2015 and 2016 editions being held at the COEX Hall in Seoul, South Korea. The 2017 edition of the festival was held at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, South Korea. The 2018 and 2019 editions were also held at the same venue. Gocheok Sky Dome would also go on to host the 2022 edition of the festival.
The 2020 edition, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was a pre-recorded event from Daegu, South Korea. The 2021 edition was held at the Incheon Namdong Gymnasium in Incheon, South Korea. The 2023 and 2024 editions of the festival were also held in the city of Incheon at the Inspire Arena. SBS Gayo Daejeon in 2024 featured two editions, one summer and one winter.
SBS Gayo Daejeon is one of the pop and Korean music festivals of South Korea, alongside the likes of K-Pop World Festival, Dream Concert, and the Incheon Korean Music Wave, as well as Supersonic Festival and Asia Song Festival.
It is also one of the oldest pop music festivals, with only Dream Concert and Asia Song Festival being older than it. H.O.T., the winner of the first grand prize of SBS Gayo Daejeon during its award ceremony in 1997, is considered to be one of the earliest K-pop groups.
