Deadbeat, the fifth full-length album by Kevin Parker under the Tame Impala name, is officially released. Across the songs on this latest record, themes of pressure, loneliness, and more have been explored.

In recent interviews, Kevin Parker spoke about the chaos of releasing Deadbeat, about trying "to hold on for dear life," and about positioning himself as "a self-deprecating f**k-up stuck in a negative feedback loop." This album aligns with these statements. Tame Impala's 2020 record, The Slow Rush, saw chart success and global acclaim.

This article ranks every Deadbeat track from the strongest to the weakest. Read on to get an insight into Tame Impala's latest album.

Tame Impala 'Deadbeat': Every song ranked from best to worst

1. Piece of Heaven

This track feels like Tame Impala's moment of calm. The lyrics are simple and direct. The production feels intimate with relatively gentle synths, vocals, and minimal reverb. Notable lyrics include:

"This room is a shambles/ But I think it's fine/ To you, it's untidy, maybe/ To me, it's divine"

2. My Old Ways

As an opener, it nails the themes of Deadbeat. Kevin Parker's falsetto sounds vulnerable, and the lyric carries repeated weight. The slow build adds to its weight. The production gives out cozy vibes. Tame Impala sings:

"Thought I would never go back, but just this once/ A little present for holding out so long/ I could not bear the thought of it two days ago/ Don't think I would forgive myself"

3. Loser

The track combines groove and confession of the singer. Lyrics depict wanting connection and expecting failure. The sound here is relatively darker and slightly sagging. Some parts of Loser feel repetitive. Notable lyrics include:

"I'm a loser, babe (Yeah)/ Do you wanna tear my heart out?/ I'm a tragedy/ Tryin' to figure this whole mess out"

4. Oblivion

Oblivion comes with minimalism. The loops, the pads, and the repeated "I don’t want to go to oblivion" build a sense of fading. The track does not have a rush to reach a climax. Instead, it drifts as Tame Impala sings:

"When I saw your face, I was hypnotized, baby/ I could see my future, never yearned for love so deeply/ Will it be okay? Will you feel the life we live on?"

5. Dracula

This is one of the more textured tracks of Deadbeat. The vampire metaphor talks about being alive at night to avoid exposure. The bass and groove make the track compelling. It is a bit more showy. Some of its lines are:

"In the end, I hope it's you and me/ In the darkness, I would never leave (Ah)/ You won't ever see me in the light of day"

6. End of Summer

This track closes out Tame Impala's Deadbeat. The lyrics are relatively direct: "I waited till the end of summer, and I ran out of time." In its second half, an extended instrumental section with kick and synth arpeggios is featured. As long as it is, it sometimes feels like it drifts. Some of the song's lines are:

"I could not deny it was overwhelming/ Living out our lives for just one thing/ And right now, I would love to put my arms around you"

7. Obsolete

It is a quiet gem. Some of the lyrics hit hard. The production gives space to Parker's vocals. He sings about the concept of emotional obsolescence. It can feel a bit underwritten. It is a solid one, but it does not stand out. Tame Impala sings:

"Always was so easy hanging out/ But it sure doesn't feel like that now/ I know that you have been feeling rough/ Or are you falling out of love?"

8. Afterthought

It straightforwardly depicts breakup emotion. The lyrics are painful in their clarity. The production is also gentle here. For some fans, it may feel repetitive. Notable lyrics include:

"Tell me, what do I say to turn this around?/ Ninety-nine days and you think I know how/ I can be emotional/ If you need me to"

9. See You on Monday (You're Lost)

See You on Monday (You're Lost)'s hook "You're lost" signifies self-critique and insecurity. The verses about social performance add a sense of anxiety. However, the track never fully breaks out. Tame Impala sings:

"She said, "I'm the one you want and you can turn me on"/ "But life ain't too much fun when there's no telling where you're heading""

10. Not My World

This one begins with light melodies and ends in dissociation. The repeated phrase "It's not my world" works as emotional distancing. The track is not as fleshed out as others in Tame Impala's Deadbeat. Lyrics include:

"Day after day, waking just in time to catch the last/ I was a song light /We were going home, we walked by/ Must be nice, must be nice"

11. Ethereal Connection

Ethereal Connection sounds like a brief interlude. The melody is airy. As it is brief and minimal, it features filler. The track does not always grab hold. Lyrics include:

"I don't say it too often/ Isn't usually my style/ I'm here whatever happens/ Don't you know that I'll stand by"

12. No Reply

The pace picks up in this track. However, despite some hooks, it feels less essential. In Deadbeat, it lacks the emotional weight of other stronger tracks. The song feels less realized. Tame Impala sings:

"I apologize for no reply/ Wish I could describe what goes on inside/ Get these butterflies, man, they make me tired/ I was so uptight and preoccupied"
