R&B singer Jon B, known for his 1997 hit “They Don’t Know,” commented on Chlöe Bailey and Gunna’s 2022 track “You & Me”. The song samples parts of his original work. His comments, made during a July 2024 podcast, drew wide attention online.

On the Can We Talk R&B? podcast, Jon shared with the host Ian Von that he did not approve of how his song was used by Chlöe Bailey and Gunna. He also said that the artists did not get his direct permission. His words were shared online and started a debate.

Later, a report by VIBE in 2024 stated that the sample was cleared by Sony Music. In a recent interview (June 2025) on Shirley Temple's podcast, Jon B confessed that he regretted comments he made in 2024.

What did Jon B say about the sample?

Jon expressed that he did not like how the sample was used. He also said that he was not asked directly to clear it. On the podcast, he stated:

“They put that ratchet record out that I couldn’t stand, and I wish they never did. [They] actually never got my rights to do that record, either, so, Gunna, we gotta holler about that… That’s some business s--- we got to handle.”

He also shared his view on sampling in general:

“My lane is my lane, and my area is my area, and I earned that. If you made a hit in your area, you do your song whatever it is, I’m not going to just come into your area, take your joint and make it mine and then not pay you or whatever.”

These comments made clear that Jon B did not approve of the way his song was used.

Did Jon B consider legal action?

Jon B has made similar remarks in previous podcast episodes as well. Jon hinted at possible legal steps. According to The Jasmine Brand and Hot 97, Jon said during the podcast:

“That’s some business s--- we got to handle.”

In later coverage, it was noted that Jon had “alluded to taking legal action”. However, as of the latest reports, no legal action has been publicly confirmed. There are no court filings or announcements on record.

It is also unclear whether Jon followed up privately with Sony Music or the artists’ teams after the podcast aired.

What did Jon B recently say about his comments?

In June 2025, during an interview on Shirley’s Temple podcast, Jon B reflected on how he first reacted to the sample. He said he was inexperienced with podcasts at the time and regretted his tone:

"I regretted how I spoke on it the first time because I wasn't used to being on podcasts. First of all, I didn't do a lot of podcasts. So I was sort of new to that whole thing of speaking my truths in a way."

Jon B also said that seeing Chlöe Bailey’s reaction to his earlier words made him think about the situation differently. As a father of two daughters, he explained:

“It hurt me because I was like, ‘Man, that could be my daughter right there.’ […] It hit different because I never wanna come off like a hater.”
