Rick Davies, the founder and vocalist of British rock band Supertramp, passed away after a long battle with cancer. Davies was 81 when he died. At the time of his passing, his net worth was estimated by Celebrity Net Worth to be $10 million. The majority of the singer's net worth came from his music.
At a young age, Davies was enthralled with rock and roll. He decided to join Vince and the Vigilantes in 1959 while studying at Swindon College. A few years later, while he was still in school, he formed Rick's Blues (1962). Four years down the line, he started playing the organs for The Lonely Ones. This was when he decided to form his second band, Supertramp.
Rick Davies and his band, Supertramp, started becoming more successful after their third album, Crime of the Century. After the release of their third album, they moved to the US and then released Breakfast in America, which became their sixth studio album. This took their fame to another level, hitting no.1 in the US and no. 3 in the UK. They have managed to sell up to 20 million albums.
In addition to his band and music, Rick is also the owner of Rick Davies Productions.
How did Rick Davies get introduced to music?
Richard Davies was introduced to music at the young age of 8 by his parents. They gave him a radiogram, an instrument which is a combination of a radio and a record player, and that is where he listened to a few records left by the previous owner.
His mother mentioned:
"Music was the only thing he was any good at at school."
Davies also shared his experience after listening to Drummin’ Man by Gene Krupa. He said:
"It hit like a thunderbolt... I must have played it 2,000 times... That was it."
At 12 years old, Rick Davies joined the British Railways Staff Association's Brass and Silver Jubilee Band as a drummer. He also shared:
"As a kid, I used to hear the drums marching along the street in England, in my hometown, when there was some kind of parade, and it was the most fantastic sound to me... Then, eventually, I got some drums and I took lessons. I was serious about it... I figured if I could do that - I mean a real drummer, read music and play with big bands, rock bands, classical, Latin, and know what I was going to do - I would be in demand and my life was set..."
He continued:
"But, of course, it didn't work out that way. Eventually, I started fiddling with the keyboards, and that seemed to go over better than my drumming, for some reason. So you’ve gotta go with what people react to."
As for his keyboard skills, his mother, Betty, revealed:
"taught himself most of what he knows about music."
Rick Davies' passion for music shaped his journey from a young boy experimenting with drums and keyboards to becoming the legendary founder of Supertramp. He will be remembered for the immense impact he has left in the music industry.
