Sabrina Carpenter unveiled the new alternative cover of her freshly released seventh studio album, Man’s Best Friend. This was after the singer received backlash from fans for the original cover of the project back in July.
In the original cover, the Please Please Please hitmaker wore a black dress while posing on all fours in front of a male figure who pulls her hair. This cover evoked mixed reactions from netizens, as most fans didn't appreciate how the pop star portrayed women in the picture.
Months after the controversial album cover, Sabrina Carpenter released an alternative cover of Man’s Best Friend. The cover showed the singer leaning against a man in a black and white photo.
In a recent interview with Gayle King of CBS Mornings, released on August 29, Carpenter addressed the reaction to the original cover.
“It’s just there’s a lot of pointing fingers, you know, at the point, they haven't heard the project. They don't know me. They don't know my intentions. They don't know the stories I'm telling.”
The singer revealed that she mostly took what the critics said with a grain of salt and that her real fans would have immediately understood what she intended when she first shared the cover.
“I do try to take it with a grain of salt and also know that my fans who know me and know the person behind the music look at that photo and they know exactly what it is.”
She continued:
"I always say you don't have to like what I do. I think there's this weird misconception that every artist has to check every box for everyone to like everything about them. It's never been that way. It's never going to be. So, I'm okay if Tommy from Arkansas doesn't like what I do."
Sabrina Carpenter further shared her personal interpretation of the album cover that received the backlash:
"My interpretation is being in on the control, being in on your lack of control and when you want to be in control. Like I think as a young woman, you're just as aware of when, you're in control as when you're not. And I think some of those are choices. And I think for me, this whole album was about the humanity of allowing yourself to make those mistakes, knowing when you're, you know, putting yourself in a situation that will probably end up poorly, um, but it's going to teach you something."

“I do have many different processes. I think for me, the thing that always jumps out the most is the lyrics first.”
She added that she was going through a lot at the time, which influenced the album's theme.
“This one felt like I was going through a lot and I was like, well, I could either you know sit and sulk about it or write about it and it doesn't mean I have to put any of this out.”
