OLTL alum Tika Sumpter's mother arrested

You'll never believe the shocking reason why One Life to Live star Tika Sumpter's mom was arrested this week.

North Carolina police officers must be pretty serious about their library books. So much so, any book-related misstep could land you in jail.

One Life to Live alum Tika Sumpter (ex-Layla Williamson) took to Twitter to share her outrage over the fact that her mother, 65-year-old Janice Acquista, was arrested over a ten-dollar late fee.

"Make sure you turn in your library books North Carolina!" she tweeted. "My mom was just arrested for having a late fee of 10 dollars on an overdue book!"

What makes the matter worse, according to Sumpter, is that her mother had returned the book a while back, but "someone didn't put it in the system."

Luckily, Sumpter's mother wasn't locked in the slammer for long. "She's out now. Every cop at the jail thought it was ridiculous," the actress shared. "They couldn't even believe it."

Acquista may be out of jail, but the controversy surrounding her arrest is just getting started. The Johnston County Sheriff's Office defended their actions, claiming that Acquista had been arrested because the check she used to pay the overdue fine bounced, and she never paid up.

Meanwhile, Sumpter is calling the arrest a scam. "An overdue book should NEVER result in a warrant," she tweeted. "This is a legal scam."

It's unclear at this time whether further action will be taken against Acquista, who was released on $500 bail. Her booking record states her charge as a "simple worthless check."
