A week after Brandon Blackstock, Kelly Clarkson’s ex-husband, died on Thursday, August 7, 2025, his death certificate was released, providing new details about the cause of his passing. On the day of his death, a representative of the late producer and talent manager released a statement.
“It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away. Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family's privacy during this very difficult time.”
In the death certificate obtained by People magazine, the 48-year-old father of four passed away at 11:13 a.m. at his home in Butte. He did not undergo an autopsy and was cremated.
The certificate, certified by the Butte-Silver Bow County Clerk and Recorder’s office in Butte, Montana, was issued on Wednesday, August 13, and filed on Thursday, August 14. It detailed the cause of his death, listing malignant melanoma as a contributing factor and indicating that the manner of death was natural causes.
In addition, the document revealed that the deceased battled cancer for three years, with seizures being a significant contributing factor to his death, “but not resulting in the underlying cause.”
More details on Brandon Blackstock’s passing
Following the passing of Brandon Blackstock, his family members paid tribute to him. Seth Blackstock, the 18-year-old son that Brandon shared with his ex-wife Melissa Ashworth, wrote on his Instagram on August 9, 2025:
“I lost my hero yesterday. Words can’t describe how proud of you I am on raising me and your 3 other kids. You’ll have to watch me grow up from a Birds Eye view now buts that’s ok with me. There’s no one else on this earth that I would want to be my dad because no one can be half the man you were to me. I’ll see you everyday when the sun rises and falls.”
His mother, Melissa, also wrote a heartfelt tribute to her former husband on Instagram.
“Brandon was full of charm, wit, and just an absolute gentleman who happened to wear cowboy boots, wrangler jeans, and a cowboy hat. He was by far, hands down, the best Daddy and Pa. He loved hard and he fought hard. The best thing Brandon has left for his children is they know where he is. I've heard it said, 'Nothing is lost when you know where it is' and Brandon is with Jesus his Savior. Savannah, Seth, and our grandchildren are the best parts of who Brandon and I are. Thank you all for your prayers and condolences.”

Before Brandon Blackstock died, Kelly Clarkson postponed her Las Vegas shows to be there for him.
“While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill, and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them. I am sincerely sorry to everyone who bought tickets to the shows, and I so appreciate your grace, kindness and understanding,” she wrote on Instagram.
The Stronger hitmaker, who shared two kids, 11-year-old River Rose and 9-year-old Remington "Remy" Alexander, with Blackstock, hasn't released a statement since his death.
Brandon Blackstock is survived by four children: Savannah, Seth, River Rose, and Remy; two ex-wives: Kelly Clarkson and Melissa Ashworth; his parents: Narvel Wayne Blackstock and Elisa Gayle Ritter Gilbert; his siblings: Chassidy Blackstock Standefer and Scott Standefer, Shawna Blackstock Meyers and Jason Meyers, Shelby McEntire Blackstock and Marissa Blackstock; and his grandchildren: Lake, Julianna, and soon-to-be-born LouCasey Lee.
Brandon Blackstock’s memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, August 17, 2025.
