Did Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin’s latest breakup mark the end for good?

Rumour has it that Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin have broken up again, and the split might be final this time around. People reported on June 4, 2025, that the Fifty Shades actress and Coldplay frontman have broken up their on-and-off relationship for the final time.

The couple reportedly began dating in 2017 after Martin split from his wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, in 2015. While Dakota and Martin were tight-lipped about their engagement, People reported claims from an insider that they had gotten engaged “years ago” and were waiting for a convenient time to wed.

Reports of the couple’s final breakup come after they were photographed having a cosy time in Malibu on May 16, 2025. In January, they were spotted walking hand in hand in India as Martin toured the country with his band Coldplay.

Dakota Johnson, in an interview with Bustle in March 2024, opened up about being a stepmom to Martin’s two children that he shares with Paltrow, Moses and Apple:

"I love those kids like my life depends on it. With all my heart."

Johnson also spoke about being the ultimate fan girl for Chris Martin. She stated that she enjoyed travelling to watch Martin perform alongside his iconic group:

"I don’t know. I love watching him. I could watch him every day. I don’t know how to explain it. I feel like, I don’t know... I’m watching my most favorite being do his most favorite thing."

Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin were rumoured to have broken up in 2024

Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin’s relationship was rumoured to be on the rocks in August 2024. Daily Mail quoted an alleged source close to the couple saying that they had tried different ways to make their relationship work to no avail:

"Chris and Dakota have tried desperately hard over the past few months to make their relationship work. They’ll always have love for each other, but they’ve both come to the conclusion that the relationship cannot be sustained in the long term."

Daily Mail’s “source” added that the couple were very busy and being dragged apart by their conflicting schedules:

"They’re both busy people. Chris has been in Europe with Coldplay, and they both have personal priorities, passions, and work commitments that don’t naturally intertwine with each other. They wanted it to work, but it just hasn’t, and they’ve now accepted that it is best to move on."

A representative for Dakota Johnson reportedly debunked the rumours and told TMZ that they were false as the couple were “balancing things the best they can.”

Another source reportedly told People that the couple were “happy and together," and added:

“It's like every time they are not spotted together for a while, there are breakup rumours."

The couple has neither confirmed nor denied if the latest breakup rumours about them are true.
