Jason Derulo has done it again, or has he? The Met Gala is a spectacle unlike any other, and you know the Met Gala season is here when you see the return of extravagant outfits, celebrities making bold statements, and the inevitable return of the Jason Derulo tumbling down the stairs meme on your timelines. It has now become a tradition through which fans celebrate the return of the Met Gala.

Every year, the meme is accompanied by a photo of a mysterious man dressed in white attire tumbling headfirst down the stairs, and every year, timelines fill with fans laughing at the meme, blissfully ignoring the fact that the man is, in fact, not Jason Derulo. This year was no different, and timelines were flush with fans recreating the meme, as fans collectively decided to pretend that it was Derulo who took the unfortunate fall:

"Jason derulo falling is the real met gala tradition", joked one fan.
"He just recreated secret love song music video that's all", quipped another.
"Poor guy keeps getting these spoofs again from years ago. Not real. I got u @jasonderulo", another fan chimed in.
"He has fallen down the Met Gala stairs for the 7th year in a row", remarked another fan.
"This was a borderline backflip, not a fall down the stairs", wrote yet another fan.
"Jason Derulo has fallen down the Boston cop slide" exclaimed another.

Origins of the meme

The origins of the meme take us back to 2015, when the meme first made its appearance. Back when X was still known as Twitter, a user, knowingly or unknowingly, attributed the photo of a man tumbling down the stairs to Jason Derulo. This marked the birth of a meme that now rears its head every year at the Met Gala.

Derulo has played a good sport throughout it all, even though he has not ever attended the Meet Gala. He has had to quash the rumors repeatedly when fans kept asking if it was really him who took a fall down the stairs. When the meme first started making the rounds on social media, Jason spoke to Audacy News in 2015, in which he narrated a hilarious anecdote:

"My grandmother, she's 93 years old, and she called me, and she's like, 'Are you alright — you know, I heard you fell down the stairs. I was like, 'Grandma, I'm good. I ain't fall down no stairs"

Upon further introspection, it was found that the photo is from the 2011 Cannes Film Festival in France, when the mysterious man dressed in white tried to evade the security and gatecrash the event. The only thing that crashed, however, was his dignity as he went tumbling down the stairs headfirst, even as the security tried to swoop in like hawks to escort him away.

While the identity of the man remains a mystery, the meme has become the internet's favorite punching bag, and the fans' commitment to the bit only makes it funnier.
