American game designer Vince Zampella, known for creating Call of Duty, is dead. The designer was married to Brigitte Zampella for 18 years before she filed for divorce in 2015, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason. TMZ broke the news and reported that Brigitte filed for primary custody of the children and asked for spousal support. The divorce was reported as amicable, and there was no evidence of a prenuptial agreement.

Vince Zampella has three children, and at the time of the divorce, they were reported to be minors.

Vince died after a fatal car accident on Sunday at age 55. According to reports, the single car accident happened after his Ferrari slammed into a concrete barrier on the Southern California Angeles Crest highway and caught fire. The accident claimed the lives of Vince and the person in the passenger seat.

On Sunday, it was announced that Vince Zampella died following a car crash in California. According to the California Highway Patrol, the game developer was travelling in a Ferrari with another person when it crashed and caught fire on a highway in Los Angeles on Sunday.

“For unknown reasons, the vehicle veered off the roadway, struck a concrete barrier, and became fully engulfed,” the Patrol said in a statement.

Battlefield confirmed Vince’s death via a tribute shared on its official Instagram account.

“We are heartbroken by the loss of Vince Zampella, a creative leader whose work shaped generations of players and helped define what modern shooters and action games could be.”

In the tribute, the game praised Vince’s remarkable career and his role in its franchises including Call of Duty, Titanfall, Apex Legends, and the Star Wars Jedi series. According to the lengthy tribute, the developer guided Battlefild with care and purpose and made decisions that “mattered most to the community and the long-term future of the franchise.”

“While his impact reached far beyond any one game or studio, we will remember Vince for how he showed up every day, trusting his teams, encouraging bold ideas, and believing in Battlefield and the people building it.”

Adding:

“We are deeply grateful for his leadership, his generosity, and the care he brought to everything he touched, and we will carry that forward with us.”
