Dua Lipa now holds the citizenship of three countries. Being the daughter of Kosovan-Albanian parents born in the UK, the singer has wanted to strengthen her connections with Kosovo for many years. She holds both the UK and the Albanian nationality, and the granting of the Kosovo citizenship completes her struggles to formalize her attachment to her ancestral lands.

The singer was officially granted citizenship of Kosovo by presidential decree today, making her longstanding dream a reality in the process. During her early years, Lipa spent a couple of years in the Kosovan capital of Pristina and was recently awarded Kosovan citizenship for her contributions to the nation’s cultural landscape.

President Vjosa Osmani signed the decree in a ceremony that was held today to celebrate Lipa's naturalization. The emotional ceremony nearly brought the singer to tears, as a children’s choir performed her hit song “Levitating". As per BBC, Dua Lipa later celebrated the occasion by releasing a statement, where she said:

"It completes the duality I have always had within. I love this country and this means so much to me and my family." She added, it "feels like my two sides are now one."

Dua Lipa's Kosovan roots

The intention of Lipa to build stronger relations with Kosovo has been clear over the past few years, and it has been carried out in the form of advocacy, cultural programs, and public speeches. She has not only propagated the notion of the liberalisation of the visa program among the younger generation within the country but has also established the Sunny Hill Festival in Pristina with her father.

As it happens, Dua Lipa is currently in Kosovo for the Sunny Hill Festival, which aims to showcase Kosovo’s vibrant youth and cultural potential. Her commitment was previously recognized in 2022 when she was named an Honorary Ambassador of Kosovo.

Speaking on the occasion of the ceremony, President Vjosa Osmani expressed her feelings regarding the issue via an Instagram post, where she stated:

"Special honour that today, by presidential decree, to grant citizenship of the Republic of Kosovo to Dua Lipa, one of the most important cultural and artistic personalities in the history of our country."

The statement went on to add:

“Dua and Kosovo have always been inseparable. She has been and continues to be one of the most powerful voices on the world’s biggest stages, making history with her achievements and becoming an inspiration to millions of people around the globe. Dua, Kosovo is always proud of you."

Dua Lipa's statements in the wake of the ceremony also stress the personal significance of the citizenship for her, underlining the fact that the citizenship makes her identity even more united.
