Coco Gauff won the Women's singles of the 2025 French Open tournament, which kicked off on Saturday, May 25, 2025, and is scheduled to conclude on Sunday, June 8, 2025, with the men's final. This year's women's draw featured renowned tennis stars, including Iga Swiatek, Carlos Alcaraz, and Aryna Sabalenka, who lost the final to Coco Gauff.
During Gauff's acceptance speech after her victory, she recited a quote from Tyler, The Creator. She explained the significance of the words:
"I didn't think honestly that I could do it, but I'm actually gonna quote Tyler, The Creator, right here, and he said that 'if I told you I ever had a doubt inside me, I must be lying.' So, I'd like to leave that with you guys. I think I was lying to myself, and I definitely could do it," she said.
She gave a shout-out to the rapper, her fans, and the city of Paris.
"So shoutout to Tyler and shoutout to you guys; thank you, Paris!" Coco added.
Coco Gauff reveals being in a dark place after losing the 2022 French Open
Gauff beat Aryna Sabalenka in an intense game yesterday.
After emerging winner, the 21-year-old began her speech by expressing her heartfelt gratitude to God. She then reminisced on the struggles and dark periods she had to endure after losing in the final of the 2022 French Open.
"First, I'd like to thank God for always keeping me covered," she said. "I was going through a lot of things when I lost this final three years ago, and I'm just happy to be here; with all the dark thoughts and just the fact that I stayed through it, it means a lot to be here," Gauff stated.
She continued by commending Sabalenka for the level of showmanship she displayed at the finale. Gauff also expressed her eagerness to play against the Belarus-born athlete again.
Coco Gauff stated:
"Next, I would like to congratulate Aryna. You're a fighter, you're the No. 1 player in the world, and I know I'm saying it was a tough match, but you deserve all the results that you have, and every time we play is such a tough match for me, so congratulations and hopefully we can play again."
She proceeded to thank her team for their support and efforts in providing a safe space for her.
She reflected on the crucial role they played in her journey:
"You guys do a lot for me, from washing my clothes to keeping me grounded and giving me the belief that I can do it. You guys probably believe in me more than I do myself, so I really appreciate and love you guys. And to my brothers at home ... you guys are the reason why I do this, and you inspire me more than you know, and to my family back at home, thank you," Coco Gauff said.
Concluding her speech, Gauff appreciated her fans for cheering her on during the game:
"And also, I would like to thank you guys. The crowd really helped me today. You guys were cheering for me so hard, and yeah, I don't know what I do to deserve so much love from the French crowd, but I appreciate you guys, so merci beaucoup."
The Men's singles and Women's doubles categories scheduled for June 8, 2025, will be the last events to wrap up the Grand Slam.
