Apple has teased a software upgrade for its beloved iPhone series. On May 13, 2025, the phone company announced a BCI Human Interface Device profile— a technology enabling users to control their iPhones, iPads and Apple Vision Pro using neural signals.

This feature is activated via an implant in the user’s brain. According to Fast Company, Apple has collaborated with Synchron, a brain computer interface company, to develop a stent-like device inserted in a vein in the brain’s motor cortex.

In a press release published on May 13, 2025, CEO and Co-Founder of Synchron, Tom Oxley, described the project between his company and Apple as a defining moment:

“This marks a defining moment for human-device interaction. BCI is more than an accessibility tool; it’s a next-generation interface layer.”

He added:

"Apple is helping to pioneer a new interface paradigm, where brain signals are formally recognized alongside touch, voice and typing. With BCI recognized as a native input for Apple devices, there are new possibilities for people living with paralysis and beyond.”

The Synchron CEO added that the neurotechnology was designed to restore autonomy and improve the lives of millions of people who've lost nearly all movement.

Fans react as Apple teases phones to be controlled by the brain

@Dexerto on X announced Apple’s latest technology to its followers on May 13, 2025. Opinions were divided on the usefulness of BCI and its effects.

Some X users warned that it may have adverse effects on people with the implant:

“You left out the important information. The implants, by their very nature, must be sending and receiving units…Do you realize how dangerous that is? @suayrez asked.
“Our data was not enough. Now they want to access our thoughts as well,” @IgnitionCasino added.
“Apple this, Apple that. We’ve heard enough about its lies, man,” @22theboy expressed.

Other Netizens seemed to embrace the idea of neurotechnology and expressed excitement over the news:

“We’re officially living in the future, controlling devices with brain signals? Apple’s about to change the game in ways we can’t even imagine,” @cryptodrugs101 gushed.
“I think I speak for everyone when I say we need this,” @Madridnews_R reacted.
“This was always inevitable, may as well get this over with sooner rather than later,” @Concretejungle4 added.

In its press release, Synchron revealed that controlled trials of the BCI Human Interface Profile will begin later in 2025.
