The suspect in the tragic shooting of political activist Charlie Kirk has been arrested, per a tweet from Kash Patel, Director of the FBI. Patel thanked Utah's local and state authorities for their cooperation in the shooting investigation and promised to provide more updates on the case. He wrote on X:

"The subject for the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody. Thank you to the local and state authorities in Utah for your partnership with @fbi. We will provide updates when able.”

Patel had earlier paid tribute to Charlie Kirk, who was tragically shot at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025, whilst adding that the FBI was “closely monitoring” reports of the shooting:

"We are closely monitoring reports of the tragic shooting involving Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Our thoughts are with Charlie, his loved ones, and everyone affected. Agents will be on the scene quickly, and the FBI stands in full support of the ongoing response and investigation."

Before the FBI head’s announcement on X, the Governor of Utah, Spencer Cox, stated in a news conference that a person of interest was in custody. He vowed that authorities in Utah would capture the perpetrator of the crime:

"I want to make it crystal clear right now to whoever did this, we will find you, we will try you, and we will hold you accountable to the furthest extent of the law," he said. "And I just want to remind people that we still have the death penalty here in the state of Utah."

Popular conservative political activist Charlie Kirk was addressing a crowd at a campus in Utah when he was struck on the neck by a single bullet. He was rushed to a hospital and was later announced to have succumbed to his injuries.

According to Utah authorities, the shooter wore dark clothing and fired from a roof on campus some distance away from the gathering.

President Donald Trump mourned the loss of Kirk on Truth Social:

"The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife, Erika and family. Charlie, we love you!"
