Kai Cenat has kicked up a frenzy on social media by launching a global search for directors for the “Somebody Loves Me” music video. The streamer is teaming up with Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR for their music video of their album, and in a creative step seldom seen before, has opened up the process to fans and aspiring creatives worldwide, inviting them to submit their own video concepts and footage.
The idea was floated on one of Kai Cenat's live streams, and after a thorough selection process, 20 of the aspiring creatives will be asked to direct a 30-second to a minute-long clip. There'll also be a $15,000 budget attached to the project that will be used to fund the video, with the promise of the best submissions getting full creative control over the projects further down the line. The deadline for the submissions is May 24, 2025.
“Somebody Loves Me” was already a huge hit among the fans, and the opportunity for the fan-led music video to be a part of Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR’s album “$ome $exy $ongs 4 U” makes the initiative even more significant for aspiring directors. The announcement was made by Kai Cenat in one of his live streams, in which he said:
"Y’all also get to play a part. We are choosing somebody who loves me. Everybody who loves directing, everybody who loves to come up with treatments and s**t. 30 seconds to a minute of an idea of what y’all got."
The clip was then shared by Drake on his Instagram as well, and has since raked up thousands of impressions. The rapper has urged fans to show their whole creative arsenal while keeping in line with the budget constraints of the said project. He isn't demanding Hollywood-level production from aspiring directors, but wants the project to be something different:
"This is about using your creativity, racking your brain, to make something work that's genius. Once you get that bit of financial boost, you can get that idea across the line. [...] Find those ideas that are right there in front of you that everybody's going to watch and wish they came up with"
How did Kai Cenat and Drake's collaboration materialize into existence?
Funnily enough, the project was borne out of Kai Cenat's previous critiques of Drake’s ‘Nokia’ video. Cenat vented his frustrations to thousands of fans live on stream and even touched upon what he'd have done differently if he were the one directing the video. This initially left Drake fuming, but since then, he seems to have warmed up to the idea and has roped in Kai Cenat to direct the music video of one of the songs.
This approach also marks a significant departure from traditional Drake music video production methods, Kai Cenat has made a brave choice to involve fans and help them reach artists in a new way. The announcement of the fan-driven initiative has caused quite a stir on social media and also acts as a fun way of recognizing the creative potential that exists outside traditional production channels.
